Williston, Vt. — The Vermont chapter of Girls on the Run is seeking volunteers to help lead the activity-based youth development program in four towns around the Upper Valley.

GOTR Vermont operates in 89 communities in the northern half of the state, bringing girls in grades 3-8 together for meetings and exercise proven to develop and improve competence and confidence in its participants. The organization is in need of 250 more coaches statewide to ensure that all girls will have an opportunity to take part in this program.

Three Upper Valley Schools (Bradford Elementary, Randolph Elementary and Tunbridge Central) and the Norwich Recreation Department run local GOTR programs and are in need of help. Groups meet twice a week for 90 minutes, where volunteer coaches utilize a curriculum to engage girls in fun, interactive lessons. The program culminates for all participants with a celebratory 5K road race on June 2 in Essex Junction.

Volunteer coaches need not be runners but must complete a background check and participate in online and in-person GOTR training and workshops. GOTR training qualifies for continuing education credit.

Red Zone 5K at DBS

Wilder — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department is once again prepping for the Super Bowl by hosting its fifth Red Zone 5K fun run and walk on Feb. 3, the day before the big game.

The race, which is open to runners, walkers and families with strollers or leashed dogs, begins and ends at the Dothan Brook School, with a 9 a.m. start time. Participants will cover a route that includes parts of the Wilder Pedestrian Path along with back roads in Wilder village. The course is certified by USA Track and Field; proceeds from the day benefit Hartford Parks and Rec scholarship programs.

Couture Tops LocalsAt Proctor Open GS

Andover, n.h. — Lyme’s Courtney Couture had two of the three best finishes by an Upper Valley athlete during Tuesday’s NHARA giant slalom doubleheader at Proctor Academy’s Blackwater Ski Area.

Racing in a strong field of collegiate and junior racers, Couture — competing for Colby-Sawyer College — took seventh and 14th place in the two races. Hanover’s Caitlin Blinkhorn, racing for the Holderness School, was 13th in both events. Ford Sayre Academy’s Eva Schiffman was 20th and 31st, and clubmate Molly Hackett took 34th and 39th.

Proctor’s Molly Mueller took advantage of the home-slope edge to win both races.

FSA Racers Meet FIS Racers

Richmond, Vt. — Barely a week after racing under the lights in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, against FIS World Cup competition, Starksboro, Vt.’s Robby Kelley took on top Eastern racers — including several from Hanover’s Ford Sayre Academy — in the Cochran’s Holiday Slalom on Dec. 29 at Cochran’s Ski Area.

Colin Rozzi had the top FSA finish in a field of World Cup and collegiate racers, placing 18th. Ethan Ross was 30th and Alex Purcell 33rd.

Ford Sayre alumna Caitlin Blinkhorn, of the Holderness School, had an Upper Valley-best 23rd place finish among the girls. Siena Curtis was 49th for the best result by a current Ford Sayre Academy athlete.

Full Moon Fiesta in January

Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department hopes to take advantage of a clear sky and snowy trails for its Full Moon Fiesta progressive dinner at the Storrs Hill Ski Area lodge on Jan. 20.

Participants can use skis, snowboards or snowshoes to traverse a route through the area, where area restaurants will set up spots for light food and hot beverage breaks. As an eco-friendly event, those taking part are asked to reduce waste by bringing their own mugs, utensils and bowls. The event is scheduled to run from 6-8 p.m.

The cost is $10 per person for ages 13 and older, and $5 for youths ages 6-12. Children ages 5 and younger can join in at no charge. Advance registration is recommended at www.lebanonnh.gov/register; for more information, call 603-448-5121.

Burke Mountain Trips

Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department will host a pair of skiing and snowboarding trips for youths in grades 5-8 to Burke Mountain in the coming months.

Trips are scheduled for Jan. 16 (registration deadline: Jan. 9) and March 23 (registration deadline: March 16). Lebanon Rec will provide transportation from City Hall starting at 9 a.m., with a planned return of 4:30 p.m. Participants must either provide their own equipment or rent gear at the mountain for an additional fee. It also is recommeneded that youths bring their own lunches or bring money to purchase something at Burke.

Wright’s Mountain Visioning Workshop

Bradford, Vt. — The town of Bradford will hold a public visioning workshop and open house to collect ideas on the future of the Wright’s Mountain Devils Den Town Forest from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the Colatina Exit restaurant.

Bradford is one of 10 communities in Vermont to receive a Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program grant. The meeting is an opportunity for the public to share its ideas to use the grant on a range of recreation offerings Wright’s Mountain can provide in the future.

The Bradford Conservation Commission is interested in increasing use of the forest for recreation but in a way that balances the integrity of forest values and existing wildlife populations. Since the meeting is set up as an open house, participants are welcome to stop by at any time during the two-hour session.

Learn-to-Curl at WABA

White River Junction — With the Olympic curling tournament barely a month away in South Korea, the Upper Valley Curling Club is readying its latest learn-to-curl clinic for newcomers to the sport.

UVCC’s next learn-to session will be on Jan. 13 beginning at 5:45 p.m. at Wendell A. Barwood Arena. The club will provide all of the tools of the trade; all participants need do is wear warm clothing and shoes with non-ski soles. The clinic starts with off-ice instruction on the rules of curling before hitting the ice for more training and a short contest, if time allows.

The cost to participate is $25 and is open to any individual age 12 and older. Space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended.

Vt. Golden GlovesSeeking Entries

Essex Junction, Vt. — Entry forms are now available for amateur boxers interested in competing in next month’s Northern New England Golden Gloves boxing tournament.

The tourney will take place on two Saturday nights, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3, in the Robert E. Miller Building at the Champlain Valley Expo. Both sessions begin at 7:30 p.m.

The tourney is limited to four boxers per weight class and will start with semifinal rounds in all divisions.

The tournament is open to all amateur male and female boxers between the ages of 18 and 40. The competition is split into novice and open divisions based on the number of amateur bouts fought. Novice champions at Northern New Englands advance to the New England finals in Lowell, Mass., on Feb. 8 and 15. Open champions will advance to Lowell for the New England finals on Feb. 21-22. Open division winners then can compete in the national Golden Gloves championship in Omaha, Neb., in May.

Snowshoeing at APD

Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department is planning a series of showshoe hikes on trails at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital campus in February.

The hikes are scheduled for Feb. 9, 16 and 23, each running from 10 a.m.-noon. Lebanon Recreation staff will lead each group; participants are recommended to dress for winter conditions and bring a snack, water, backpack and any additional equipment.

Youth Ice Fishing Derby

Quechee — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for its 17th Youth Ice Fishing Derby on Dewey’s Pond on Jan. 27.

The free event, which coincides with Free Ice Fishing Day across Vermont, will run from 7 a.m.-noon. The derby will be split into three age groups — ages 6 and younger, ages 7-10 and ages 11-14 — for prizes. Food, refreshments, fishing holes and bait will be provided, along with a limited supply of equipment.
