After his retirement, Stephen chose to take yet another road and became an author of two books: Dartmouth’s Dedicated Alumni (2004) and Passion for Skiing (2010) and the accompanying film, Passion for Snow, which garnered an Emmy nomination for documentary of the year (2013). Stephen was also very devoted to countless cultural and academic causes in both England and the United States, including: benefactor of Leighton House, Royal Opera House, Tate Gallery and Vail Dance Festival; advisor to Said Business School at Oxford University; alumni leader and fundraiser at Dartmouth College; trustee of the Colorado Ski Museum and trustee emeritus of Hartwick College; and member of the Pilgrims Society, Broad Street Ward Club, American Society of London, Game Creek Club of Vail and the Yale Club of New York City.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Lenge Waterhouse; his daughter, Melinda Waterhouse, of New York, N.Y.; his son, James Waterhouse, of Alexandria, Va. and his wife, Desmarie Waterhouse and their children, Reese and Huxley Waterhouse; and his niece, Marie Waterhouse, and her family of Los Angeles, Calif. and Washington, DC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Colorado Ski Museum or the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College.
A memorial service will be held in Hanover, on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Church.
