Here’s a look at some Upper Valley residents who competed on the college varsity level this fall. A compilation of winter-sport competitors will follow that season.
Crew
Williams (Mass.) College freshman Katrina Wheelan (Hanover) was part of the Ephs’ second varsity boat at the Head of the Fish event in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in late October. Rowing in the bow position, her group finished third out of three teams in 12:44, 33 seconds slower than the first varsity boat. There were 2,124 boats of all levels competing during the day. … Cornell freshman Hannah Marks (Hanover) coxed one of the two lead boats at the Princeton Chase for the Big Red women’s team. … Sophomore Tristan McCutcheon (Lyme) rowed in the St. Lawrence men’s first varsity eight during the Bridge to Bridge Regatta in Rome, N.Y. The Saints finished third out of four teams in 23:27.1. On the women’s side, SLU sophomore Addie Brendel (Norwich/Hanover) was part of a varsity eight that finished 19th out of 26 teams at the Head of the Charles in Boston. The boat clocked 17:35.5.
Men’s Cross Country
Colby-Sawyer sophomore Ben Jones (Enfield/Mascoma) finished 115th out of 370 runners at the NCAA Division III New England championship. His time was 27:26.3 on the 8-kilometer course. The Chargers won their second consecutive North Atlantic Conference title and Jones was sixth at the conference championship in 27:22.9. Classmate Justin Whittaker (Bridgewater/Woodstock) was 12th in 28:48.6. … Freshman Raphael Harriman (Lebanon) ran in three meets for Ithaca (N.Y.) College. His last outing produced an 8K time of 31.83.3 and a placement of 172 out of 209 runners at the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, N.Y. … Matthew Phipps (Hartford), a sophomore at Grinnell (Iowa) College, finished 96th out of 192 runners at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships in 26:57.2. The Pioneers finished 16th out of 29 teams and Phipps earned All-Midwest Conference honors. … UMass Lowell junior Josh Fontaine (Lebanon) finished 56th out of 81 competitors in 26:53.5 at the America East conference championship. The River Hawks were second out of nine teams. … Vermont Tech finished traveled to Virginia Beach, Va., for the USCAA national 8K meet. Junior Dave Mattern (Tunbridge) was 92nd in 31:53 and sophomore Michael Dunkle (Tunbridge) was 105th in 33:00, a personal best. … Wesleyan was 10th out of 11 teams at the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship meet. Senior John Henry Vansant (Hanover/KUA) was 105th out of 140 runners in 28:01. … Franklin Pierce senior Martin Gradijan (Lebanon) was 56th out of 159 runners at the NCAA Division II East Region championship, crossing the 10k finish line in 36:03.1. The Ravens were fifth out of 23 teams. … Bentley (Mass.) University senior Nick Skarin (Sunapee) ran once this fall, finishing 47th out of 65 competitors and in 31:23.1 at the 8k Bruce Kirsch Cup at the Hopkinton (N.H.) Fairgrounds. The Falcons were fourth out of six teams.
Women’s Cross Country
Sophomore Rachel Emery (Woodstock) competed in six races for Castleton and posted a personal-best time of 22:38.8 at the Vermont State meet. … Sophomore Isabelle Tuggle (Norwich/Hanover) competed for Lyndon State, which finished 52nd out of 56 teams at the NCAA Division III New England Championships. Tuggle ran 30:18.4 and for a second consecutive years finished 372nd, this time out of 393 competitors. … Johnston State’s roster included two locals, sophomore Lily Denmeade (Hartland/Woodstock) and senior Ashley Fogg (White River Junction/Hartford). The Badgers were ninth out of 10 teams at the NAC championship meet with Fogg coming in 65th out of 90 runners in 27:13 on the 5k course. Denmeade was third when her program hosted the 8k Badger Invitational in September, running 24:50. … Senior Apama Alavilli (Hanover) was Carnegie Mellon’s first finisher as the Tartans were 24th out of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III national championship. She ran 21:46.90 and placed 49th out of 279 runners. … Plymouth State’s women were second at the seven-team Little East Conference championship and freshman Leanne Burgess (Bradford/Oxbow) finished 27th out of 72 runners in 21:12 on the 5k course.
Field Hockey
Rivier (N.H.) College goaltender Emily Foster (West Lebanon/Lebanon) started 13 of the 14 games in which she played for the Raiders (3-12), producing a 2.99 GAA and a .759 save percentage. … Bryant (R.I.) University was 3-16 and is a combined 10-46 the past three years. Junior forward Haley Wood (Brownsvile/Windsor) started 13 of 17 Bulldogs games in which she played and had one assist. Classmate and midfielder Emily Perryman (West Lebanon/Lebanon) started every game and had three goals and an assist. … Sophomore forward Kelsey Pollard (Meriden/KUA) started 10 of 17 games in which she competed for St. Lawrence (6-11) and produced two goals and an assist. Freshman defender Anna Parker (Meriden/KUA) appeared in six games and freshman goaltender Sophie Cardenali (Hanover) started all 16 contests in which she competed, posting a 2.34 GAA and a .734 save percentage. … Castleton State was 11-9. Junior defender Iyanna Williams (Windsor) played in 13 games and started four of them. Freshman defender Loretta Blakeney (Woodstock) started three of the 15 games in which she appeared. … Senior midfielder Kaytlynn Kenney (Newport) was part of Colby-Sawyer’s 9-8 campaign. She started once in 12 appearances and scored once. … Massachusetts (13-8) featured redshirt senior defender Shauna Rankin-Byrne (Lebanon), who started all 21 games and had two goals and three assists. … Sophomore forward Kendra MacDonald (Lebanon) helped the University of New England go 18-5, win its fourth consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference title and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the third consecutive year. MacDonald started every game and produced nine goals and five assists. … Freshman defender Elle Brine (Lebanon) helped Bowdoin (Maine) College go 10-7 while starting all 16 games in which she played, scoring three times and assisting twice. … Hannah Scott (Claremont/Stevens) was a sophomore midfielder and Lily D’Anna (Woodstock) a freshman midfielder/forward for Simmons (Mass.) College (12-7). Scott posted two assists while starting 16 of the 19 games she started and D’Anna started one of the 11 contests in which she participated, scoring twice and assisting once. … Roanoke (Va.) College was 14-5 with freshman forward Hannah Bunten (Lebanon) scoring once during the five games in which she played. Freshman midfielder Marion Lovett (Claremont/Stevens) appeared in three contests. … Sophomore defender Miranda Judd (Lebanon/KUA) competed for Merrimack (11-7), starting every game and scoring once. … Freshman midfielder/defender Liz Colannino (KUA) appeared in two games for the Cardinals (4-11). … Vassar (N.Y.) College was 11-7 with senior forward Storm Sideleau (KUA) producing five goals and four assists while starting 12 of the 17 games in which she played. … Freshman goaltender Rachel Loseby (Hartford) started 16 of the 18 games she played for Keene State, going 12-4 with a 1.45 GAA and an .818 save percentage. The Owls (14-9) won the Little East Conference title and reached the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Football
Senior co-captain and linebacker Oliver Kaija (Reading/Woodstock) made 50 tackles to help Rensselaer Polytechnic (N.Y.) Institute share the Liberty League title, win the Dutchmen Shoes Trophy game against archival Union and reach the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. … Bowdoin was 0-9 and has lost 17 consecutive games. The Polar Bears included sophomore cornerback Matt Whalen (Hanover) and senior linebacker Austin Stern (Lyme). The former played in eight games, had 18 tackles and returned six kicks for 90 yards. The latter had 18 tackles while appearing in three games. … UNH (9-5) reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the 14th consecutive year and its roster included redshirt sophomore tight end Jack Cavallaro (Hanover) and freshman defensive back Dametres Perry (Orford/Rivendell). Cavallaro played in six games and returned one kickoff for seven yards. Perry redshirted. … Castleton (6-4) featured junior defensive lineman Tayler Larmie (White River Junction/Hartford) and freshman defensive back Luc Issa (Woodstock). The former made 13 tackles in nine games while the latter made 18 tackles and returned seven punts and five kickoffs for a total of 12 yards, also in nine games. … Nichols (Mass.) College was 2-8 with sophomore linebacker C.J. Lawrence (Newport) playing every game and recording 67 tackles, third-best on the team. He also had one sack.
Golf
T.J. Barber (Cornish/Lebanon), a sophomore at Nichols, competed in six matches with an 81 scoring average. The Bison finished fifth out of 19 teams at the New England Collegiate Golf Association. … Juniors David Albright (Grantham/Lebanon) and Austin Walters (Grantham/Lebanon) are at Johnston State, which finished sixth out of nine teams at the NAC championships. Albright tied for 18th out of 43 golfers with round scores of 83 and 82 and Walters tied for 27th with a 90-83 performance. … Senior Nate Choukas (Hanover) played in each of Trinity (Conn.) College’s four matches this fall, producing a 74 average. He tied for third out of 50 competitors at the NESCAC fall qualifier. … Freshman Connor Morse (KUA) played every match for St. Michael’s (Vt.) College, scoring an average of 79 and tying for 79th out of 127 competitors at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association championship. The Purple Knights’ 15th-place finish among 26 NCAA Division II and Division III schools was its best since 1988.
Men’s Soccer
Middlebury (12-7) featured senior midfielder Jed Sass (White River Junction/Hartford). He started every game and had two goals. … Vermont Tech was 5-11 and its roster included four local residents: junior midfielder David Mattern (Tunbridge), freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Alvin (White River Junction), sophomore midfielder Hunter Grace (Windsor) and freshman midfielder Scott Shepherd (Grantham/Lebanon). Mattern started 11 of the 13 contests in which he saw action and had one goal and one assist. Alvin started all 11 games in which he played and had a 4.27 GAA and a .584 save percentage. Grace started six of the nine games in which he competed and Shepherd got into 13 games, starting eight of them and assisting once. … Senior defender Jeff Purdy (Grantham/Lebanon) started all 19 games in which he played for Norwich (11-4-5) and scored twice. … Southern New Hampshire (11-3-3) enjoyed the services of sophomore defender Hugh Townsend (Lebanon), who started 16 of 17 contests for the Penmen. … Freshman midfielder/forward Tucker Stenger (Enfield/Mascoma), sophomore defender Chris Morse (Meriden/Lebanon) and freshman defender Carter Adams (Lebanon) helped New England College go 11-7-2. Stenger started all 20 games in which he played and had two goals and four assists. Morse started 10 of the 19 contests he entered and assisted once. Adams started 13 of the 15 games he played and earned first team All-Northeast Conference honors. … Sophomore forward Alex Crompton (Woodstock) and junior defender Jackson Greenspan (Meriden/KUA) were part of Babson’s 9-9 season. Crompton played in 15 games and started 12 times while scoring 6 goals and assisting once. Greenspan started every contest and had three goals and four assists. … Colby (6-6-2) got two goals and an assist from sophomore midfielder Asa Berolzheimer (Hanover), who started 13 of 14 games in which he played. Junior teammate and forward Wyett MacDonald (Plainfield/KUA) played in five contests. … Castleton was 12-7-2. Senior goalkeeper Aaron Parker (Hartland/Hartford) started every game and had a 1.10 GAA and an .814 save percentage. Freshman midfielder Zak Gillette (Bethel/Whitcomb) appeared in five games. … Freshman forward Collin Campbell (Woodstock) started 13 of 18 games in which he played for Johnson State (7-11) and had four goals and an assist. … Curry (Mass.) College was 8-11-1. Freshman midfielder Kuda Muhlauri (Meriden/Lebanon/KUA) started 11 of 18 games and assisted once. … Northeastern was 3-12-3 with midfielder Charlton Muhlauri (Meriden/KUA). He started 11 of the 18 games in which he appeared. … Junior midfielder Morgan Dewdney (Meriden/KUA) started seven of 15 games in which he played for Bates (Maine) College (8-6-2). … Senior Jack Lightbody (Etna/Hanover) was the starting left back for Carleton (Minn.) He had two assists while starting eight of the 11 games in which he saw action. … Lyndon State (5-9-1) featured sophomore midfielder Matthew Townsend (Barnard/Whitcomb) and freshman defender Noah Perry (Thetford). Townsend started two of the 12 games in which he played and scored once. Perry appeared in eight games. … Freshman midfielder Jake Acker (Norwich/Hanover) got into one game with Bentley (7-10-2). … Rivier (2-14-1) received a goal and two assists from freshman midfielder Antonio Houde (Woodsville), who played in every contest. … Sophomore forward Jack Doherty (Meriden/KUA) played in all 22 matches for UNH (13-4-5) and started 17 of them. She started one of the 16 games in which she played and scored once. … Sophomore forward Kelly Brigham (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in 17 games at Connecticut College for a second consecutive season. The Camels (12-4-1) reached the NCAA Division III playoffs for a second consecutive year. … New England College (8-9-2) featured senior forward Sara Locke (Weathersfield), junior midfielder Michaela Pomeroy (Thetford/Thetford Academy) and sophomore defender and forward Emily Barnum (Taftsville/Woodstock). Locke started 16 of the Pilgrims’ 19 games and had four goals and two assists. Pomeroy started every game, producing six goals and three assists and Barnum appeared in five games. … Johnson State was 5-10 and featured sophomore goalkeeper Kaila Lemmer (Barnard/Woodstock) and freshman forward Morgan Grace (Plainfield/Lebanon). Lemmer started all 14 games in which she competed, going 3-9 with a 3.48 GAA and a .779 save percentage. Grace started eight of the 15 contests in which she appeared. … Gabbi Rozumek (Woodstock) was a sophomore defender at Rhode Island’s Roger Williams University (14-8-2), which reached the NCAA Division III playoffs’ first round. She started two of the 18 games in which she saw action and assisted once. … Sophomore forward/midfielder Dee Martin (Bath/Woodsville) started one of seven games in which she played for Clarkson (N.Y.) University (8-7-3). … The College of St. Joseph in Rutland, Vt., lost the first three games of its second varsity season by a combined 23-0 before canceling the rest of its schedule. The Fighting Saints were 0-12 during their debut campaign in 2016. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Turco (Windsor) was part of both squads, starting each of this fall’s contests. … New Hampshire Technical College was 14-2-1 and reached the USCAA national playoffs’ second round. The Lynx included freshman forward Sydney Clark (Sunapee) and freshman midfielders Mikayla Locke (North Haverhill/Woodsville) and Mary Grzanna (Sunapee). … Sophomore goalkeeper Katelyn Fowler (KUA) started four of the five games in which she played at Elon (N.C.) University, compiling a 2-1 record, a 2.53 GAA and a .619 save percentage. The Phoenix were 9-6-4. … Catherine Auger-Morin (KUA), a junior defender at Lake Forest (Ill.) College, helped the Foresters go 7-8-2 while starting 15 of 16 games in which she played and assisting once. … Ella Bankert (KUA), a freshman midfielder for Vermont (9-9-2), started 15 of the 20 contests in which she played and had three goals and an assist. … Junior defender Katie Sanders (KUA) helped Castleton go 11-8-2. She started every game and assisted four times. Nathalie Ferneau (Canaan/Hanover) is a senior with the Dartmouth equestrian team, which won four consecutive meets this fall and bested 10 other teams during the last of those victories. Ferneau was second in novice fences and fifth in intermediate flat that day. … Maggie Kinder (Pike/Woodsville) is a Colby-Sawyer junior rider who finished second in novice fences during the Chargers’ 11-team, fall finale at Dartmouth. Sophomore Sophia Sorci (Lebanon) was third in novice flat and sixth in novice fences. … Seniors Kali Covell (Hartford) and Ashley Fogg (White River Junction/Hartford) were part of the Johnson State tennis team’s 5-8 season. Covell was 5-5 in singles and 2-9 in doubles while Fogg was 5-7 and 5-6. … Tufts sophomore Emily Calandrella (Norwich/Hanover) crewed for the coed sailing team. She helped the Jumbos finish seventh in the “B” division at the 77th Professor Erwin Schell Trophy event at MIT in late October. Calendrella came on as a substitute for the last three starts out of 18. … Franklin Pierce’s women’s bowling team is 21-18 at its midseason break. Sophomore Katey Comstock (Hartland/Windsor) was part of the squad’s two highest Baker games thus far, with scores of 259 and 257.
