At a conference last spring, he learned about a nonprofit organization called Women’s Institute for Financial Education that aims to help women be financially independent. One of its programs — the Second Saturday Divorce workshops — caught Rhim’s attention and he realized “that I could help … people who are in a very vulnerable position when thinking about divorce.”
In January, Rhim will begin hosting a series of workshops that help women navigate the complicated process of divorce. The first will be on Jan. 6.
Some of Rhim’s clients have given up careers to stay home and raise families and “don’t have familiarity with financial issues.” This can put a woman at a financial disadvantage to her spouse.
“You just haven’t been in the workforce and dealing with a lot of employment issues, retirement issues,” Rhim said. In addition, some women are dealing with the stress of re-entering the workforce. Sometimes, there are child support and alimony to consider.
“I always tell people this is the biggest financial transaction of your life,” Rhim said.
The workshops are designed for women to ask questions and receive guidance, no matter what stage of the divorce process they’re in.
“Earlier is better, simply because you need to start understanding, first of all, the process, what is involved emotionally (and) financially,” said Rhim, a certified divorce financial analyst. “The workshops are designed to be a safe space where questions can be asked. We’re all professionals. Discretion and privacy is of the utmost importance.”
The hope is that women leave the workshops with “some level of confidence on what they need to do next in the process,” Rhim said.
Editor’s note: The cost to attend the Jan. 6 workshop is $25. Other workshops will be held on Feb. 3 and March 3. All workshops will be held at Green View Advisors, 8 Beaver Meadow Road, Norwich, in the first-floor conference room.
