Local Roundup: Marauders Power Up for Second Straight Game

West Lebanon — After losing half its scoring production to graduation, the Hanover High boys hockey team is finding powerful ways to fill those holes.

The Marauders went 3-for-3 on the power play on Saturday during a 6-2 victory over visiting Salem, putting them 5-for-7 on the man advantage through two games this season.

Elias Zinman, Owen Stadheim and Matty Gardner had scored the power play goals for Hanover, accounting for three of the Marauders’ first four goals of the day.

“It’s so helpful when you can be productive in that area,” Hanover coach Dick Dodds said. “We have several different solid power play groups, so that even when we don’t score, we’re getting great opportunities to establish momentum by working the puck around. There’s been some really crisp passing and pretty solid off-the-puck play.”

Stadheim finished with two goals and an assist for the Marauders, while Zinman had a goal and two assists and David Lehmann and Gardner a goal and an assist each.

Sylas Oberting had two assists, Hans Williams netted an unassisted tally and Braxton McNulty had a single assist for Hanover, which led 2-1 before outscoring the Pythons 4-0 in the second period.

The Marauders were outshot in the first period, but countered with strong play by goalie Harris LaRock, a senior and first-year starter who finished with 21 saves.

Hanover wasn’t penalized.

“Another story of the game was our discipline,” Dodds added. “We played hard, but we played smart.”

The Marauders return to the road Thursday at Nashua North-Souhegan.

Manchester — Nate Chickering scored two goals with an assist for the Raiders (0-2).

Senior Ethan Daly scored his first varsity goal, and Ian Garland scored the fourth goal for Lebanon-Stevens, which trailed 3-0 early before pulling within 3-2 in the second period.

Jack Sandmann, Aiden Yates, John Cloud and Aaron Damren added assists for Lebanon, and Andrew Friend made 13 saves for the Raiders, who host Alvirne on Wednesday.

North Country 4 Hartford 3

Jay, Vt. — The Hurricanes surrendered a two-goal lead in the second period, then gave up the winner on a breakaway early in the third in a rematch of last season’s Vermont Division II semifinal.

Clayton Groenewold and Tyler Hamilton each had a goal and an assist and Andrew Daley had two assists for Hartford, while A.J. DuBois scored one goal and Korrigan Allen had an assist.

The Hurricanes (0-3) led 3-1 before the Falcons tied it with a pair in the final two minutes of the second period.

“We didn’t manage the game very well,” Hurricanes coach Todd Bebeau said. “We’re working hard, but we’re not making good choices in critical junctures.”

Ross McFate made 16 saves for the Hurricanes, who go back on the road Wednesday to face Brattleboro.

KUA 6, Milton Acad. 2

Dedham, Mass. — Matt Egan and Arlo Merritt each scored twice for the Wildcats, who scored four times in the third period to run away from Milton Academy in the Flood Marr Tournament semifinals.

Thomas Samuelson added a power play goal and Seth Stadheim added a score on a rebound for the Cats, who were manned in net by Sean Dynan.

Rice 6, Woodstock 1

South Burlington — Lisa McNamara scored all six goals for Rice, including two shorthanded during a single Wasps’ power play in the first period.

Woodstock still ended up converting on the same power play, Sidney Pilot scoring from Faye Stevens to make it 2-1 at first intermission.

Bridgit Black made 25 saves for Woodstock, which visits North Country-Lyndon on Wednesday.

White River Junction — The Hurricanes fell to 0-2.

Zoey Pfeiffer and Jacqueline Gour manned net for Hartford, which visits North Country-Lyndon on Saturday.

West Lebanon — Bishop Guertin scored four first-period goals and sent Lebanon-Stevens (1-1) to its first loss.

Makayla Maccioli and Lily Barber scored for the Raiders, and Lena Nowell added an assist.

Halle Drew made 27 saves for Lebanon-Stevens, which on Tuesday heads to Hooksett to face Trinity-Bishop Brady.

Brookline, Mass. — The Wildcats fell to 3-2-1 with a setback in the Southfield School tournament.

Lucie Turcotte scored the lone goal for Kimball Union, assisted by Mia Brown and Mikah Baptiste.

Bethel — The Mountaineers improved to 2-1.

Eddie Bray scored 18 points and Colby Washburn had 15 for Whitchester, which led by as many as 22 in the second half.

Montreal — On Friday, the Wildcats went 2-0 in the Sun Youth Holiday Classic at Concordia University, qualifying for the semifinals.

Nick Timberlake scored 17 points for Kimball Union against Newfoundland-based Holy Heart of Mary, then poured in 25 against Quebec-based Champlain College.

Eze Dike (14, 15) and Enoch Cheeks (12, 10) also scored double figures in both games for unbeaten KUA (12-0).

Whitcomb-Rochester 35 Northfield 14

Bethel — Sophomore Sylvie Coltey contributed a game- and career-high 16 points as the Mountaineers prevailed in their season opener.

Coltney’s performance helped compensate for the loss of Hayley Mears, Whitchester’s top returning scorer and rebounder who is out with a broken finger suffered during a preseason scrimmage.

Amelia Mattrick added eight points for the Mountaineers, who have a quick turnaround, hosting Polutney on Monday.

Randolph — Emily Grady scored 15 points and Kasie Mills (12 points, 10 rebounds) had a double double for the Galloping Ghosts (2-1).

Hanover, Lebanon Place in Top 5

Hanover — The Marauders had four podium finishes to place fourth, one spot ahead of rival Lebanon at a Winter Track League meet featuring New Hampshire and Vermont teams.

Hanover’s Colm Seigne won the 600-meter run in 1:27.99, while Martin Deveon (300; 38.49) and Kyle Doucette (44 dash; 6.82) were each third.

All three were part of the Marauders’ runner-up 4×200 relay team (1:39.51), while David Wilson was sixth in the 1,000 for the Marauders.

Fifth-place Lebanon was led by Marcus Roper’s win in the shot put (47-9.5) and Zach Petrin’s long jump victory (19-9.25).

The Raiders were fourth in the 4×400 relay, while Ed Bieszczad (3,000) and Zach Herndon (55 hurdles) placed sixth.

Thetford placed ninth, led by Clifford Ransom (fourth in the 1,500) and a fifth-place showing in the 4×400, while Dillon Buttner (fourth in the 600) and Aidan Trimble (sixth in the long jump) guided 12th-place Sharon.

Tim Hodges was fifth in the 1,000 for Oxbow, which was tied for 13th.

Hanover’s girls placed fifth, winning the 4×400 in 4:32.92.

Three of the relay team’s runners scored in other events, including Kira Smith’s runner up finish in the 600 in 1:47.22, one hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Christine Aman. Anna Stafford was also fifth in the 600, one spot in front of Peiper Thomas as the Marauders took four of the top six spots in the event. Stafford added a sixth-place showing in the high jump for Hanover.

Thetford placed seventh, led by distance specialist Meaggie Balch’s runner-up finishes in the 1,500 (5:11.09) and 3,000 (10:51.07).

Layla Hanissian was fifth in the 1,000 and Macy Lawson was fifth in the high jump for the Panthers.

Eighth-place Oxbow was led by Izzy Giesing’s win in the 1,000 (3:06.21) and Kelly Daigle’s second place in the shot put (31-08), while Emily Larson placed fifth in the 55 hurdles.

Lebanon was ninth as Grace Furlong placed fourth in the 3,000, Claudia Simione was fifth in the in the 55 dash and the Raiders’ 4×400 relay team placed sixth.

Hartford Third At S. Burlington

Shelburne, Vt. — The Hurricanes beat defending champion Fair Haven in three games to seed third for the Baker finals, then fell to Burlington in two.

Dylan Crowley bowled a high game of 203, while Thomas Raymond hit rounds of 182 and 183 and Joey Raymond hit a 182 for the Hurricanes.

Hartford is off until a Dec. 30 tilt at Rutland.

Randolph Edges Windsor

Springfield, Vt. — The host Yellowjackets beat Brattleboro in the prelims before falling to the Galloping Ghosts in the Baker final, 103-90, 169-117.

South Royalton fell to Brattleboro in the consolation round to place fourth.

Rayce Gilbert (180, 173), Grayson Frazer (139, 132), and Wyatt Bean (126, 122) bowled strong games for Windsor.

Gabe Howe (179, 126) and Chris Lamson (105, 107) bowled the top scores for the Jacks.

Windsor visits Rutland on Dec. 30.

Dartmouth Alum Picked in Rule V Draft

Hanover — Left-handed pitcher Mitch Horacek, a former Dartmouth College pitcher, was selected by the Colorado Rockies from the Baltimore Orioles in the Triple-A phase of last week’s Rule V draft.

A native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Horacek was 5-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 32 games last season for Class-A Frederick, according the Rockies’ website.

Horacek pitched for Dartmouth from 2011-13, going 13-7 with a 4.83 ERA in 27 games, 25 of them starts.
