Fairlee, Vt. — Herbert D. “Bert” Stickney of Lake Morey Road died Saturday evening Nov. 11, 2017 at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor, Vt. following a period of declining health.  He was 87.

Born on Feb. 17, 1930 in Newberry, Mich., he was the son of Newell G. and Ethel M. (Smith) Stickney.

Bert grew up in Munising, Mich. and on Jan. 23, 1954, he married Carol J. Claflin. After graduating from High School in 1948, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard.  During his 30 career in the USCG, he served in many stations including Key West and St. Petersburg, Fla.;  Argentia, Newfoundland, Salem, Mass., Hawaii, Elizabeth City, N.C.; Kodiak and Anchorage, AK, Retiring in 1978 as an AECM. 

In retirement, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He will be remembered as a “Jack of all Trades” and could fix anything.

Besides his parents, he is pre-deceased by brothers Charles and Warren “Red” Stickney and sisters Ardeth Hetrick, Audrey Coryell, Alice Diebert, and Ida Rathbun.

He leaves his loving wife of 63 years Carol J. Stickney of Fairlee, Vt.; a son Herbert D. Stickney, II of Anchorage, AK; two daughters Debra L. Stickney of Fairlee, Vt. and Julia Tilson of Lebanon, Ore.; nine grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held in the spring 2018 at the Bradford Congregational Church in Bradford, Vt..
