Royalton — Voters approved a $750,000 bond to renovate and upgrade the 95-year-old Royalton Memorial Library.

Worries among library officials that pairing the bond with a school merger vote could hurt its changes proved to be unfounded, as unofficial vote tallies released Tuesday night showed it passing handily, 374-133.

The vote will allow the Royalton Memorial Library Association to move forward with plans to bring the building into compliance with fire and safety codes, and to make it fully accessible.

The plans also calls for replacing the building’s heating and cooling system, adding a meeting room and expanding book storage space.

The Selectboard-supported bond is expected to result in actual borrowing of $290,000, with the $460,000 project balance covered by a successful fundraising campaign.

The two-story brick library was built between 1920 and 1924, and was entered in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Royalton Historic District in 1976.
