Lebanon — Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital is looking for volunteer greeters and guides to help patients navigate the hospital’s new Multi-Specialty Clinic outpatient building, scheduled to open in early November.

The position involves greeting patients as they come into the building and helping them find their way to registration and other areas. Because the multi-specialty clinic is the first new building opened since the hospital was built, patients may need extra help familiarizing themselves with the space, Peggy Cooper, volunteer services coordinator at APD, said in a telephone interview.

“Volunteers are coming to a building that is new and fresh. It’s an exciting time for us. The new building is a big deal,” Cooper said.

The volunteer position is for four hours per week. Cooper said it’s a great chance to meet new people and socialize.

“This is for someone who likes to be active, be with people, be inquisitive and friendly,” she said.

The hospital is also seeking volunteers to visit homebound seniors as part of the Elder Friend program. The senior care team at APD visits patients at their home or nursing facility, recommends some patients be connected with a volunteer who visits once a week.

“They develop a nice deep relationship,” Cooper said. “For the patient it provides socialization and reduces isolation. This becomes something they really look forward to every week.”

Volunteers, especially those who have lost their parents, also benefit from the arrangement.

“It’s fulfilling a need for them as well,” Cooper said. “It’s a two-way street.”

In addition to these opportunities, APD has plenty of other openings for volunteers, both within the hospital and within the community setting. For more information, contact Cooper at 603-448-7456 or by email at cooperm@apdmh.org.
