Westminster, Vt. — A 10-1 loss in a field hockey game between two teams leading their divisions would ordinarily be considered demoralizing for the losing team. Not so, in the case of Windsor’s lopsided defeat on Friday to host Bellows Falls.

What happened to Windsor was what’s regularly happened this season: Everybody loses to Bellows Falls, and by big margins. The Terriers have won 33 straight games, having not lost since the 2015 season to Otter Valley. BF’s enrollment is that of a Vermont Division III school, but the Terriers’ success — capped by a state-title run in 2016 — sent BF packing to Division II. And if BF coach Beth Coursen had her way, her team would be playing in Division I.

BF improved to 10-0-0 with the win, having scored 70 goals in those matches. When Angelina Bigwood scored for Windsor late in the second half, it was only the third goal BF has allowed all season.

Windsor (6-2-0) is still the top team in Division III, but the scales are not balanced when it comes to playing the likes of Bellows Falls. The Terriers had 18 players ready to go on Friday. Windsor had just the required 11 and a backup goalie. Yellowjacket coach Jody Wood was not able to give one field player a rest. Also, there is not a junior or a senior on the Windsor roster.

It wasn’t a question of Windsor being noncompetitive. The Jacks came into the game winners of their last five and had given up just five goals in that span. It was just a case of BF’s superior play.

“Given time, I think Windsor is going to have a phenomenal team,” Coursen said.

Wood, who held the Windsor program’s career goal-scoring crown until her daughter, Haley, surpassed her three years ago, knew her team’s chance of success on Friday wasn’t good. And she didn’t think it was a wasted day.

“This was a great lesson today,” she said. “I told the kids we will not see a team like this again this season.”

Wood also thought her goalies, Madi Leduc and Glenna Ricard, benefited from the work. Bellows Falls put 26 shots on frame in the opening half, scoring six times and adding 14 more attempts on goal in the second half.

“They are never going to see that many shots coming at them ever again,” Wood said.

Bellows Falls has had a number of games like this during the course of the season, but Coursen said there is always some things to work on.

“I thought Windsor banged with us pretty good today, and I liked that,” she said. “We just kept playing our game and not looking at the scoreboard. I kept talking to them about technique and passing. There is some value in every game.”

Molly Kelly had four of the BF goals, while Reaghan Baldasaro had three. Dani Marchica two and Abby Cravinho one.

Bigwood’s goal for Windsor came with 5:36 to play in the second half.

Windsor’s only other defeat came in the season opener at Otter Valley, 2-1. The Otters come to Windsor on Wednesday.
