Burlington — Hanover’s Mike Barton led an Upper Valley contingent of competitive cyclists by winning the men’s 40-plus age-group general classification title at the Green Mountain Stage Race on Monday.

The four-stage race started with 5.7-mile time trial in Warren on Friday, followed by a circuit race in Killington and a road race ranging between 64 and 103 miles, depending on age division, on Sunday. The GMSR concluded on Monday with a criterium in downtown Burlington.

Barton topped his age group with a 6 hours, 10 minutes, 43 seconds, good for a 41-second victory. Barton started well by winning Friday’s time trial (15 minutes, 22.73 seconds), adding a stage win on Sunday on a route that included the Appalachian Gap on Vt. Route 17 near the Mad River Glen ski area. Barton also claimed King of the Mountain honors for points accumulated in the GMSR’s climbs.

Tour de Taste

Fairlee — The Upper Valley Trails Alliance will host the 11th edition of its Tour de Taste cycling picnic on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.

Riders have the choice of three routes (6, 21 and 31 miles), each of which will begin and end at Samuel Morey Elementary School. Through each route, cyclists will get to stop periodically to sample food supplied by 16 different Upper Valley food vendors.

Holmes Tourney at CPCC

White River Junction — The White River Junction-based Jeffery S. Holmes American Legion Post 84 will hold its sixth fundraising golf tournament on Sunday at Crown Point Country Club in Springfield, Vt.

The scramble tournament fires off with a shotgun start at noon. The $85 per person fee includes greens fees, carts, awards, prizes and a post-tournament barbecue.

The first seven teams to register will also receive a dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. The tournament will also feature a $25,000-to-win hole-in-one contest, the same one that produced a winner three years ago.

Hartford Hockey Classic

Randolph — The Hartford High School ice hockey program will host its 18th Greater Hartford Hockey Classic on Oct. 7 at Montague Golf Club.

The annual 18-hole scramble tournament helps fund the Hurricanes’ varsity hockey programs. The team fee of $240 includes greens fees for a foursome along with prizes and a post-tournament dinner. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with a shotgun competition start of noon. Dinner, awards and prizes will take place at 4:30 p.m.

Capture the Flags at HCC

Hanover — Hanover High and Dartmouth College graduate Peter Williamson will team up with Positive Tracks for the first Capture the Flags, a golf-themed games course and clinic, on Sunday at Hanover Country Club.

Taking place on the club’s driving range north of downtown, the course will consist of 18 physical challenges and six mental challenges that will test any skill level. Participants receive a flag for each successful challenge, which can later be used a raffle tickets for prizes. The day will also include a golf clinic with Williamson and members of the Dartmouth golf teams.

The day begins at noon, with the raffle set for 2:30 p.m. and the hourlong clinic at 3 p.m.

There is no charge to participate, but donations will go toward Positive Tracks, the Hanover-based agency that helps youths to link athletic interests with philanthropy. Email capturetheflags2017@gmail.com for more information.

Sprouty Run Set

Sharon — Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join in the annual Sprouty, a 10K and 5K road race, on Saturday at Sharon Elementary School.

The race starts at 9 a.m. and costs $20 for the 10K and $15 for the 5K (prices increase after Aug. 24). Commemorative T-shirts go to the first 150 registrants through Sept. 2. A free kids fun run is set for 10:15 a.m.

Refreshments and music will be part of the day along with awards for the top three men and women in both races.

HCRS 5K in Sept.

White River Junction — Springfield, Vt.-based Health Care and Rehabilitation Services will celebrate its 50th anniversary by hosting a 5K road race and fun run on Sunday at Hartford High School.

Registration for the race begins at 9 a.m., with the 5K run/walk set for an 10:30 a.m. sendoff. Those less inclined for distance can participate in a half-mile fun run starting at 10 a.m., with all involved earning medals.

The cost of the road race is $20. Water and refreshments will be provided for all competitors at the race, prizes will go to top age-group athletes and raffle prizes will be on offer as well.

Harlem Wizards Game

Langdon, n.h. — Fall Mountain Regional High School’s Class of 2020 will host the Harlem Wizards comedy basketball team for a fundraising game on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at FMRHS.
