For example, D-H’s former chief executive James Weinstein, who earned a total of $1.49 million in 2015, retired this summer. In addition, Dr. Thomas Colacchio, a former member of D-H’s executive team, earned $1.1 million in 2015 as part of a delayed compensation package that ended that year.
Other high earners who have left D-H since 2015 include former Chief Clinical Officer John Birkmeyer, former Chief Clinical Officer Clifford Belden, former Chief Financial Officer Robin Kilfeather-Mackey, former Chief Human Resource Officer John Malanowski, former Chief Innovation Officer Terrence Carroll, former Chief Nursing Officer Gay Landstrom, former Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs John Butterly and former Chief Population Management Officer Robert Greene, said D-H spokesman Mike Barwell.
“Over the last year, D-H undertook a performance improvement plan that has resulted in, among other things, the elimination or consolidation of numerous administrative leadership positions,” said Barwell in an emailed statement.
Other changes may be in the works due to D-H’s ongoing management transition. Dr. Joanne Conroy joined D-H as its new chief executive earlier this month. As a result of the leadership change, Barwell said, it’s unclear whether the now-open chief population management officer position would be filled.
At the time of Conroy’s hiring, Anne-Lee Verville, chairwoman of D-H’s board of trustees, declined to offer details about Conroy’s compensation, saying that information will come out in future 990 forms. In setting Conroy’s salary, Verville said, the board looked at national benchmarks for compensation and Conroy’s compensation is “neither at the bottom nor the top of the range.”
Barwell cautioned against comparing compensation between organizations based on 990 filings.
“Comparison with Form 990s filed by other hospitals or health systems is imperfect due to different leadership or governance structures and, consequently, different reporting requirements,” he wrote. “Compensation at Dartmouth-Hitchcock is subject to rigorous internal and external evaluation, and independent third-party review to ensure market-competitive salary and benefits in conformity with IRS regulations and established industry practice.”
