Gazing to the east as the last crimson light of the rising sun left the sky Lina Tans died on Aug. 14 in Little Compton, R.I. She lay before the ocean she loved so dearly, the sounds of gentle swells over a rocky beach and the quiet murmurings of her family’s morning rituals, her breath a final salutation to the sun.
Diagnosed 9 years ago with Stage IV colon cancer Lina refused to accept the terms of her life expectancy and was determined to defy the odds and fill her and her family’s life with adventures and joy. She pursued spiritual practice through many paths and traveled to places that called to her, from Peru to Standing Rock, often with her three children. Lina was always open to the gifts that would blossom from experience. After nearly succumbing to cancer last year many people came to know Lina through videos she posted, giving and receiving prayers, exposing her vulnerabilities and inspiring others to feel the power and healing properties that come from a community of love. Even in the final weeks of her life she was an optimist about the potential for the miraculous.
A mother, a teacher, a dancer, a yoga instructor, an artist, to be her friend was to have a sister, to be her student was to receive her light. Babies and children delighted her. Her heart, her smile and home were always open. She ignited a spark in every soul she touched, a flame that will light hearts for generations. Lina is survived by her husband Adrian Tans, her two daughters and her son.
