Hanover, N.H. —
Bill graduated from the University of Rochester in 1944, and immediately joined the Navy, serving four years as Lt. JG. on a minesweeper in the Pacific. After receiving his MBA from the University of Chicago, he worked as a salesman at Formfit Rogers and then founded Monadnock Apron Company, selling hospital sheeting and plastic aprons.
Bill married Alice Emily Butz of Winnetka, Illinois, in 1948. They lived in Northbrook, Illinois; Wilton Connecticut, and for the last 35 years, very happily on the Connecticut River in Hanover. The couple particularly enjoyed boating on their “party barge” with family and friends, collecting and decorating their home with early American folk art, and spending time on their property with their large family.
Bill and Alice enjoyed Dartmouth sporting events and classical music concerts at Hopkins Center. An enthusiastic violist, Bill played with undergraduates in the viola section of the Dartmouth Symphony and in a string quartet at Kendal. He also loved tennis, paddle tennis, handball, and collegiate football. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Wilton and Rotary Club in Hanover.
Known as “Fahtie” to his large family, Bill is best remembered for his warm, outgoing nature and genuine interest in everyone around him.
William is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alice B.
