Sarasota, Fla. — Dan Ian, age 96, died Sunday, July 16, 2017, at his home in Sarasota after a short battle with cancer. Born Donato Iannuzzi to immigrant parents in Amsterdam, N.Y., he lived in Etna and Grantham, N.H. for more than 25 years, and prior to that in Pelham, N.Y., Montauk, N.Y., and New York City. He moved to Sarasota in 2011.

Dan served as a weather officer in the Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946, and later earned degrees in engineering, math and education administration at Columbia University and the University of Chicago. His career included jobs in technical writing, systems analysis, and owner of a small business. He was an accomplished yet humble man whose interests included ham radio – for which he was recertified in his late 70’s, fine woodworking and classical music. For many years he and his wife created sets for Hanover’s Christmas Revels and props for Opera North. He also played violin in the Revels orchestra and the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. Through the years Dan was a source of support and encouragement to many. Children adored his playful nature.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce of 65 years; daughter, Jennifer and her husband, John; son, Peter and his wife, Janet, son Christopher; grandson Philip, and grandson David and his wife, Hannah. A service of remembrance will be held at the Ian’s home in Sarasota in August.
