Post Mills — A 49-year-old Thetford man has been cited into court on several charges after police say he fired a shotgun over the rear portion of Baker’s General Store’s parking lot during a domestic dispute on Monday night.

Stuart Hammond allegedly fired multiple shots from the deck of an apartment, which sits above the store off Route 113, around 7:45 p.m., according to a Thetford Police Department news release issued on Tuesday.

No one was injured.

Thetford and Vermont State Police were forced to temporarily close the roadway, and store owner Mary Pomeroy said she put the store into lockdown for about 30 minutes.

“Of course it was disconcerting,” Pomeroy said of the alleged incident.

Hammond has lived above the store for several years and Pomeroy said she hasn’t had any problems with him in the past. Hammond is not currently residing there, she said.

“I am glad everyone is safe, that the police responded quickly and that no one was hurt,” Pomeroy said.

Thetford Police Chief Michael Evans on Tuesday said the area where Hammond allegedly aimed his shotgun was heavily wooded and wasn’t residential.

Hammond faces charges of domestic assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible, Evans said.

After the alleged incident, Hammond was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for “evaluation,” the release states.

Hammond will be arraigned on July 26 in Orange Superior Court in Chelsea.
