Charlestown — New Hampshire State Police said a Norwich woman is in serious but stable condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after the vehicle she was traveling in on Sunday afternoon was hit from behind on Route 12A.

According to state police, Carrie Carter, 32, was a rear passenger in a Chevrolet Aveo that was stopped in the northbound lane of 12A, waiting for traffic to pass before making a left onto Ox Brook Road.

A Chrysler Town and Country van, driven by Nellie Ellen Stark, 66, of Charlestown, also was traveling north when it rear-ended the Aveo, which was driven by Colt Carter, 33, of Norwich.

Stark’s vehicle went off the road onto the grassy shoulder near Morningside Flight Park, while the Aveo came to rest in the road.

Carrie Carter had to be extricated from the Aveo by the Charlestown Fire Department, police said. She was then airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Colt Carter and Stark suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
