Meyerrose, a recent Hanover High graduate and multi-sport standout for the Marauders, helped New Hampshire’s senior all star lacrosse team beat Vermont, 26-14, in Saturday’s Byrne Cup at Hanover High’s Merriman-Branch Field. In the fall, she’ll be heading to Southeast Asia as part of the Where There Be Dragons gap-year program, exploring parts of China, Loas and Cambodia before enrolling in St. Lawrence University next year.
“It’s like college-level classes abroad, but with experiential learning,” Meyerrose said after Saturday’s win. “There will be a lot of travel and hiking and learning from the people who live there.”
Arthur, a Woodstock attack, had a goal and an assist during the Vermont boys’ 14-11 loss. Later this week, he’s flying to Hong Kong for a marketing internship.
“I’ll have my lacrosse stick with me, but I’m not sure how many opportunities there’ll be to play,” Arthur said. “I might have to find a wall to play off of, but I do want to stay in practice because I may try to play in college, depending on where I go.”
Meyerrose has already been accepted at SLU, where she hopes to walk on to the Saints’ ice hockey team. She’s also on New Hampshire’s roster for next Saturday’s Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic at the University of Vermont.
N.H. 26, Vermont 14
Derryfield School midfielder Madi Kochanek earned MVP honors with three goals and three assists, including two of each in the second half to help New Hampshire pull away.
The Granite State led 11-7 at halftime, but Vermont scored three of the game’s first four second-half goals, pulling within 12-10 on an unassisted tally from Mount Anthony’s Brianna Zipprich with 19:02 to play.
Goals by Londonderry’s Emily Holland and Windham’s Emma Lindquist ignited a 6-1 New Hampshire spurt over the next six minutes, and the Granite State finished the game on a 14-2 run.
New Hampshire also started strong, leveraging a 7-3 lead during the game’s first 12 minutes.
“We wanted to play up-tempo, which I think the girls did a good job of,” said Hanover coach Chris Seibel, who led the Granite State team for the fourth time in the 22-year history of the girls game. “We kept three lines of middies and attacks the same, and I think they did a great job playing together considering we only had one practice together, which was this morning.”
Kingswood’s Haley Bridgeman finished with four goals and one assists, Bow’s Taylor Darrell contributed two goals and an assist and Bishop Guertin midfielder Kaitlyn Bradford had a goal and two assists for New Hampshire. Wesylan University-bound Johanna Copeland, of Hanover, had one goal and one helper, as did Winnacunnet standout Meg Dzialo. The Marauders’ Sophie Cardenali — who hopes to play field hockey and lacrosse at St. Lawrence — saw significant time on defense.
First-half goalie Meaghan Allard, of Souhegan, and Laconia’s Lyndsey Paronto each made five saves.
Burr & Burton’s Lydia Morgantini finished with three goals, BFA-St. Albans’ Andrea Esenler had two goals, two assists and Mount Anthony’s Emily Altland had a goal and three assists for Vermont. Altland’s Patriots teammate, Zipprich, finished with two goals and an assist.
Woodstock’s Miranda Johnson and Chelsea’s Grace Kay each scored twice, while the Wasps’ Rosalie Geiger had a strong game at midfield.
Green Mountain State goalie Katelyn Shaw, of Lamoille, finished with 11 saves.
N.H. 14, Vermont 11
New Hampshire shut out the Green Mountain State over the game’s first 21 minutes, building a 10-0 lead before Vermont rallied to score 11 of the game’s next 14 goals to pull within two goals with five minutes left.
Vermont couldn’t quite finish the rally, misfiring on several opportunities as New Hampshire’s defense regained some of its first-half form. A goal by Spaulding High’s Jeremy Lang with 48 seconds clinched it for New Hampshire.
Burr & Burton attack Carter Vickers led all players with four goals as Vermont shifted a seemingly lopsided affair.
“Mental toughness is a big part of the game, and that’s the kind of team we had,” said Vermont coach Trevor Wagar, of Milton High. “By the end of the first quarter, we started to realize that we could play with them or better than them. We stuck to what we were doing and, eventually, it started to work.”
New Hampshire’s bullish start included strikes by Kearsarge’s Justin Norris (goal, two assists), Belmont’s Chaz Hacking and Bishop Guertin duo Johnny Bruno and Jordan Caito (two goals each). A goal by Hopkinton’s Joe Cullinan (two goals, assist) made it 7-0, a steal and quick strike by Nashua North’s Joseph Paige put it to 9-0 an unassisted tally by Londonderry’s Peter Navarro made it 10-0.
“We talked about starting the first half strong, and the idea was to maintain the lead,” said New Hampshire coach Mike Couture, of Pelham. “Unfortunately for us, it started looking a lot more like the game two years ago (a nip-and-tuck game eventually won by Vermont in overtime). I was an assistant in that game, I’d been here before.”
First-half New Hampshire goalie Oscar Kozikowski, of Portsmouth, made nine saves and earned MVP honors. Second-half goalie Sean Tierney, of Bedford, finished with seven.
Rice Memorial’s Sullivan Baker had a goal and two assists, South Burlington’s Max Capano had one goal and an assist and Green Mountain Valley’s Justin Boes, Woodstock’s Daniel Robinson, Milton’s Devon Jackson and Essex’ Aidan Whitney all scored once for Vermont.
The Green Mountain State utilized two goalies: Rice’s Dylan Marchand (two saves) and Harwood’s Cameron Andrews (three).
