Lebanon — Buoyed by a pair of event wins, the Hanover Recreation Department girls grabbed runner-up team honors at the Connecticut Valley League middle school championships at Lebanon High School on Saturday.

Keene swept to both team crowns. The boys scored 88 points to top second-place Chesterfield, N.H. (57) and third-place Newport (48). Hanover’s girls scored 64 points for a solid second place behind Keene (81.5) and third-place Hartland (48).

Eighth-grander Ella MacLean won the 100-meter dash in 13.12 seconds for Hanover’s sole individual event victory. The other came in the 400-meter relay, where Hanover posted a winning time of 53.39 seconds.

MacLean was also third in the 200 dash (28.48). Kira Smith earned second-place points for Hanover in the 400 dash (1:04.79) and took third in the 800 (2:37.34). Caroline Loescher was third in the 1,600 (5:42.97).

Eighth-grader Daniel Frost had a big day for the fifth-place Hanover boys (26 points), winning the 1,600 (5:01.86) ahead of teammate Adam Gilbert-Diamond (5:02.77) and taking second in the 800 (2:19.85). The Lebanon boys were 11th with 12 points, the bulk of them coming from eighth-grader Tobias Bisp (third, 100 dash, 12.87).

Lebanon’s girls took fifth place as a team with 32 points. Jaclyn King claimed second in the long (13 feet, 11 inches) and Ana Goodwin was third in the triple jump (28-4) for Lebanon, which also took second in the 400 relay (55.26).

The Hartford girls (seventh, 22 points) gained a runner-up finish from Katie Trombley in the 800 (2:34.91). Gretel Josselyn was third in the 100 hurdles (17.99) for Hartford, which also was third in the 800 relay.

Calvin McCrory was second (59.81) and Eddie Jeon fourth (1:00.97) in the 400 dash to account for most of the 10th-place Hartford boys’ 15 points.

Jagger Lovely came home a winner in the 110 hurdles (17.48) and long jump (15-11) for the Newport boys, who also grabbed their 400 and 800 relays. Victoria Bassett earned a victory for the Hartland girls in the 800 (2:29.71), and teammate Eleanor Hinckley topped all in the high jump (4-11). The Oxbow girls came home with event wins in the shot put (34-5.5) and discus (84-1.5) from Kelly Daigle.

Skip’s Run Coming

Lebanon — The 14th Skip Matthews Memorial Run returns to the area running calendar on June 18 in its annual efforts to benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center’s brain tumor research fund.

This year’s run carries extra significance. The race is being dedicated to the late Doug MacGregor, a longtime Lebanon Junior High School science teacher and avid running enthusiast.

The four-mile road race starts at 10 a.m. at Colburn Park in downtown Lebanon, following an out-and-back route along the Northern Rail Trail and Bank Street Extension. The race is preceded by a one-mile fun run for youngsters at 9 a.m. Awards and a post-race barbecue follow.

The cost to participate is $25 for adults and $25 for youths ages 18 and under. The fun run is free. Online registration and further information is available at www.skipsrun.org.

Run to the Top Of Bradford

Bradford, Vt. — The Bradford Consevation Commission will celebrate National Trails Day on Sunday with the Race to the Top of Bradford.

The day will consist of two events. Runners can take part in a 3.5-mile trail race featuring 850 feet of elevation gain to the top of Wrights Mountain and back down through the Bradford forestland. Youths have the option of a 1.5-mile fun run or walk through the lower Wrights Mountain forest. Both events start at 9 a.m.

All proceeds from the day will go to the Friends of Wrights Mountain Fund, which is used to maintain both the mountain and the Devil’s Den Town Forest. On-site registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

Gen Z Sweat Lab

Hanover — Positive Tracks will hold its first Gen Z Sweat Lab on Friday from 5-8 p.m. at its 35 South Main Street location.

The evening features a storytelling event anchored by youths between the ages of 13 and 23, inculding an overview of the Gen Z age group and what makes it tick. Youths involved with Positive Tracks’ initiatives will also discuss their charitable athletic efforts for special causes and the challenges and accomplishments involved with them. The program itself will run from 6-7 p.m., with a question-and-answer session to wrap things up.
