The Tigers broke things open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The victory gives Newport a 3-1 record.
McNeel was 4-for-4 with two triples, a home run and five RBIs to fall just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. McNeel also started in the circle, tossing a complete-game nine-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
“The game didn’t quite go as we expected at first. Fall Mountain was a bit scrappier than we thought, which is good because we need to play solid team to increase our skill level,” Newport coach Sam McNeel said.
Alyssa Burr was 4-for-4 with an RBI and Lexi Page had two hits and two runs scored for the Tigers. Hanna Clark was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Wildcats led, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Starting pitcher Olivia Rockwood went 6⅔ innings, allowing just four earned runs on 15 hits while striking out two. Windsor scored in the second inning when Brooke Mc-Keen reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Carah Rugg’s RBI single. Annie Soho and Erin Wierzbicki also had hits.

Macey Carbino led the SoRo attack with a single, a triple and two RBIs. Grace Pease had three hits and drove in one run. Mara Southworth pitched a complete game, walking just five while striking out one.

Page was 2-for-3 with a walk. Smith was also 2-for-3. Seth Balch had three hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Balch pitched the first four innings, striking out nine while allowing just one hit and one walk. Ryland Richardson struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning to close out the mercy rule-shortened game.
Windsor will face Woodstock on Saturday in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Coby Hussey led the Cardinals’ bats with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Drew Grenier added two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Cody Schoolcraft had a pair of hits and drove in two. Zach O’Brien had a single and a double. Noah Spaulding had one hit and scored three runs. Stanhope helped his own cause with a hit and two RBIs.

“He was absolutely brilliant. He just pounded the strike zone. It was masterful,” Newport coach Jon Hamel said. “It’s one of the best pitchers’ duels I’ve seen. One of those games where you hate to see either team lose. Unbelievable game to be a part of.”
Newport (1-2) counterpart Kyle Fish took a hard-luck loss despite an 89-pitch complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts. Hamel praised the Tigers’ defense for another strong game; the hosts did not commit an error.

Oxbow Opens Season
Newport, Vt.
Oxbow competitors qualified for June’s state meet in 13 events. Leanne Burgess earned the girls team’s only event victory, taking the 1,500 meters in a state-qualifying time of 5 minutes, 45.83 seconds. Emily Carson was second in the 100 dash and hurdles, making states in both. Sarah Stevens (shot put, discus), Tyrus Rosten (800, 1,500) and Danielle Gordon (discus) also made the state field.
Jarret Rock won the 100 dash for the boys (12.1 seconds) to make states. Keelan Durham (high jump, 1,500 run), Jake Stimson (discus) and William Dougas (1,500) also qualified.

Colby-Sawyer led, 3-0, after the first inning of game one on a two-run double by Brendan Thurber and an RBI single by Hartford High graduate Justin Devoid. Woodstock’s Doug Avellino added an RBI infield single in the fourth inning. The Chargers led, 6-0, into the seventh inning when the Hornets scored five runs on four hits and a pair of errors to make things interesting.
Chris Hood pitched the first 6⅔ innings to pick up the win. Thurber finished 3-for-4, and Avellino was 2-for-4.
Devoid and Jackson Musco had RBIs for the Chargers in game two. Jake Greaney pitched a complete game but took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Gustav Jigrup and Alex Wright won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Dean Boodakian/Alex Townsend and Cam Lynch/Matt Burke each won 8-1 in doubles. Jigrup added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. Wright, Boodakian, Burke, Mike White and Lynch also won in singles.
Teevens to Throw First Pitch at Fenway

Dartmouth will be playing Brown at Fenway on Nov. 10 in the first of three college football games scheduled at the 105-year-old ballpark this fall.
UMass will face Maine on Nov. 11, and Boston College battles UConn on Nov. 18.

Prinzbach was a starting setting at both Connecticut and SUNY-Buffalo, graduating from the latter last year. She led the Huskies in assists as a sophomore with 1,221 and finished her collegiate career with 3,518 assists, including 1,423 in two seasons at Buffalo.
