Hopkinton, n.h. — Senior catcher Will Austin formed an effective battery with a pair of young pitchers to help the Sunapee baseball team to a 13-1 victory at Hopkinton on Monday afternoon.

Pitchers Gabe Hastings and Darren Hulton split duties on the hill for the Lakers in the mercy rule-shortened defeat of the Hawks.

Sophomore Hastings, making his first varsity start, surrendered a first-inning run but was otherwise solid. Hastings limited Hopkinton to two hits with three strikeouts over three innings for the win.

Hulton closed out the win with three shutout frames, fanning four and walking one. In addition to contributing two hits and two runs to the offense, Austin threw out a would-be base-stealer at second base and picked two Hawks off first.

Matt Nangeroni drove in three runs, Will Palin had a two-run triple and Nick Ducharme went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Lakers, who go to Derryfield on Wednesday.

Mascenic 6, Newport 1

Newport — The Vikings broke open a tight game to hand Newport a loss in its season opener.

Tigers starting pitcher Kyle Fish allowed two runs in the first inning and then settled down into the sixth when he ran up against the 75-pitch mark with a runner on third base. With new NHIAA rules on pitch counts enforcing three days’ rest for throwing more than 75 pitches, Fish departed. The Vikings were opportunistic and took control for good with four runs in the frame.

Sophomore Tony Robertson was 3-for-3 in his varsity debut for Newport. Fish struck out four while pitching to contact and letting the strong Tigers’ defense help to limit the Mascenic attack.

The Tigers host Mascoma on Wednesday.

Otter Valley 12, Windsor 1

Windsor — Justin Smith’s RBI single put the Yellowjackets in front, 1-0, in the second inning, but it was all Otters after that.

Windsor starting pitcher Adam Stapleton went 3⅔ innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Brandon Tillman scored for the Jacks (1-1), who play host to Springfield on Thursday.

The Raiders host Hanover on Wednesday.

Monadnock 6, Mascoma 3

Swanzey, n.h. — The Royals stayed step for step on opening day with the defending NHIAA Division III state champions.

“Other than some first-inning jitters, we played really well,” Mascoma coach Guy Serviss said. “It’s a loss, but this is an OK loss. We played really well, and it was our first time seeing live pitching outside all spring.”

Starting pitcher Tyler Findley went the first three innings, striking out three while allowing four runs, two of which were earned. The Huskies led, 4-0, after the first inning. Derek French and Micah McCullough combined for three innings of relief work.

Newport did get six hits off Labrie but couldn’t string many together. The Tigers got their only run in the home sixth on a Megan Howard triple and Alyssa Burr RBI single. Labrie walked just one and hit one batter.

Mascenic jumped on Newport starter Lacey McNeel for a game-opening home run and plated all of their runs in the first two frames before the Tiger freshman settled down. McNeel went the distance on six hits, fanning four.
