“We have a very young team, so I’m not angry at all,” midfielder Izzy Peress said. “We started off a little weak, but we came back on them.”
Said 23rd-year coach Sara Ecker: “We didn’t have any scrimmages this year, so we can’t hang our heads. We have to think of this as our scrimmage. All this does is tell us what we need to work on and, honestly, this sets our expectations a little higher.”
Midfielder Katie Berthasavage, the first sophomore co-captain of Ecker’s tenure, scored twice and had a beautiful assist on one of Zoe Soule’s two tallies. Berthasavage sprinted up the left sideline and drew the defense to her before flipping a centering pass to Soule, who blew in alone on goaltender Emma Windsor.
Cecelia Webber had two goals, Ashlyn Taber had a goal and an assist and junior goaltender Elizabeth Jones was a standout, making 11 saves. Lebanon had trouble with draw controls, ground balls and clears, but was patient on attack. The Raiders return only four starters from last season, when they were 7-8 and lost their first playoff game.
“I was pleasantly surprised with their composure; a first game is usually much messier than that,” Ecker said. “That shows promise.”

“This was a great early-season test and showed us the yardstick by which the top teams in the state are measured,” Hanover coach Ryan Gardner said in an email. “Owen Brooks and Alex Mosenthal played tough between the lines, but their quickness and depth were too much for us.”
Graham Penfield led the Marauders with two goals. Jake Acker and Reed Winter each had one goal. Hanover (1-1) visits Nashua North on Monday.
