Ithaca, n.y. — Hanover’s Kristian Hansen backed up his long-distance freestyle swimming credentials by posting three podium finishes at last weekend’s Speedo Short-Course Sectionals meet at Ithaca College.

Hansen scored 63 of the 67 points amassed by members of the Upper Valley Aquatic Club at the Region 1 championship. The 17-year-old’s top-three results all guaranteed spots in the Speedo Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, in late November.

Hansen started on Thursday by placing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 9 minutes, 16.0 seconds to make the field for winter nationals. Hansen added a second runner-up result in the 500 free on Saturday, clocking 4:31.45.

Hansen’s last national-qualifying time came in the 1,500 free on Sunday, where he took third in 15:32.85. He also raced in the 200 free (14th, 1:41.98) and 400 individual medley (17th, 4:06.48) at Ithaca.

Hansen also took part in the 800 free relay with UVAC teammates Erik Hansen, Jack Wadsworth and Shaun Kronenwetter, posting a 17th-place time of 7:09.71.

Trio in Battle of Badges

Manchester — Hartford’s Christian Henault, Windsor’s Trey Whalen, Lebanon’s Jeff Clattenburg, Claremont’s Michael Snide and Woodsville’s Louis Loutrel took part in a record-setting fundraising effort on behalf of the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth when they skated in the 10th Battle of the Badges charity hockey game at SNHU Arena on March 19.

The game, which pitted squads of police officers and firefighters against each other, netted more than $268,000 for CHaD, upping the 10-year tally from the game to $1.945 million.

All five Upper Valley pariticipants skated for Team Fire, which dropped a 9-1 decision to Team Police. Snide was the top fundraiser for Team Fire, bringing in nearly $13,000 for the cause. The fundraising total from the game topped 2015’s previous record by more than $27,000.

Lebanon Rec Couch-to-5K

Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department and the Upper Valley Running Club will begin their Couch-to-5K running program with a kickoff registration meeting on April 13.

The meeting will take place at Cioffredi Physical Therapy in Lebanon at 7:15 p.m. The 10-week program is geared toward newcomers or those seeking to improve, concluding with the five-kilometer division of the Red, White and Blue 6.2 road race on July 4.

Race Around the Lake

Barnard — The second event in the seven-race Upper Valley Running Series will be the BarnArts Race Around the Lake, a five- and 10-kilometer road and trail race around Silver Lake on May 21.

The races serve as a fundraiser for youth programming at BarnArts, a community arts organization. Both routes will take runners and walkers over back roads and scenic trails, starting and ending in Silver Lake State Park.

Advance registration, at a cost of $30 through May 14, is available by way of the link to the Upper Valley Running Series website (www.uppervalleyrunningclub.org). The cost to run increases to $35 on May 15 through race day. The 10K starts at 10:30 a.m., with the 5K to follow.

Spring Break Camp

Hanover — The Dartmouth College women’s soccer team will host its annual spring break camp for youths the week of April 17-21 at Scully-Fahey Field and Leverone Field House.

Each session will run from 9 a.m.-noon and is open to boys and girls from kindergarten through eighth grade. Advance registration is available at www.elitesoccercampinc.com/spring-break-camp.cfm, although participants can also register on the first day of camp.

Players are required to wear shin pads and are recommended to bring a water bottle, rain gear, sunscreen, a mid-morning snack and a change clothes. They should also have shoes adquate for indoor sessions, should weather intervene.

Post 84 Clinic

White River Junction — The White River Junction Post 84 American Legion baseball program will host the Practice With a Pro clinic at the Hartford High School gymn on April 15 from 9 a.m.-noon.

The clinic is open to players ages 10-18. In addition to Post 84 coaches Jarrod Grassi and John O’Hara, the clinic will feature infielder Connor Sheridan, a former Western Massachusetts high school all-star who spend last season playing professionally in the independent Pecos League.

Players will need to bring a glove, a personal bat and indoor shoes to take part. Sheridan, Grassi, O’Hara and a staff of former American Legion and college players will teach a variety of baseball skills as part of the one-day clinic.

Bethel Rec Fundraiser

Bethel — The Bethel Recreation Committee will hold a black-tie fundraiser featuring the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s string quintet, along with a dinner by Willy Walker, on May 13 at the Bethel Town Hall.

The evening kicks off fundraising efforts directed toward the second phase of the committee’s master plan project at the Bethel Recreation Center. Participants have two options to join the event: a $100 ticket including dinner and the music program or a $25 balcony seat to the concert. A silent auction will take place during the evening as well, with offerings from several Bethel-area businesses.
