Hanover — The U.S. Coast Guard has called off the search for a Dartmouth College student who went missing off the coast of Washington on Sunday afternoon.

Joshua L. Monette, a member of the Class of 2019, was swept from the rocks by a wave near the Hole in the Wall cove in Cape Flattery, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross said.

The person Monette was with didn’t see him resurface, Norcross said.

The Coast Guard suspended its search on Monday, and won’t resume operations unless a new lead comes forward.

“If any reports come in of new information then we can reopen the search, otherwise there is nothing else from our end at this point in time,” Norcross said, adding that the Coast Guard never “presumes or assumes” someone is alive or dead.

Dartmouth College issued a statement on Monday, but included few details about the incident.

“You may have seen public reports that Joshua L. Monette ‘19 is missing off the coast of Washington state. As we await additional news, we are reaching out to friends who may be affected to provide support,” Dartmouth College Dean of Students Rebecca Biron wrote, noting several ways for people to access counseling services. “We will keep you posted as we receive more information. Please keep Joshua, his family and friends in your thoughts.”

College spokeswoman Diana Lawrence said she couldn’t comment further.

According to Monette’s Facebook page, he is from Neah Bay, Wash., which is about 8 miles from Cape Flattery.

Dartmouth College students were on break from March 16 to March 26. Spring term classes started on March 27, according to the institution’s academic calendar.

Firefighters from the Neah Bay Fire Department, as well as multiple Makah tribal vessels aided in the search for Monette. Neah Bay is part of the Makah Indian Reservation.

A message left for Makah Tribe Assistant General Manager Patty Manual wasn’t returned by deadline on Tuesday.

“The Coast Guard would like to remind hikers to exercise extreme caution while exploring the dynamic and dangerous Pacific Northwest coastline,” the guard said in a news release.
