Barnard — The Barnard community is rallying around two of the founding members of Fable Farm, who were displaced from their home following a fire last week.

Jon Piana and Jesy Joy, along with her daughter, escaped unharmed, but lost the majority of their belongings, Piana’s brother, Christopher, said.

“It sucks that it happened, but there are so many people who are coming out to help them,” Christopher Piana said. “It’s been incredible.”

Community members have donated more than $7,600 through a GoFundMe page and have sent some “really nice” donations to a fund set up through Barnard Helping Hands, Treasurer Mary Blanton said.

In addition to financial support, residents have pitched in and washed their smoke-stained laundry, provided them with meals and short- and long-term housing options.

The couple didn’t own the old farmhouse that suffered heavy damage last Tuesday night, Piana said, but the landlord plans to rebuild. Jon Piana and Jesy Joy were in the middle of moving to a new temporary location on Monday.

The family’s dog also escaped without injury, but their cat, Ember, suffered serious burns.

Ember is recovering at an animal hospital, according to the GoFundMe page, which Blanton helped set up.

Barnard Fire Chief Scott Mills was unavailable for comment.

The Piana brothers, with their partners, started Fable Farm, a Community Supported Agriculture effort, in 2008.

Fable Farm has grown throughout the years and now is part of the Feast & Field Market, one of several farms that come together and hold a weekly event from June to October at Clark Farm in Barnard.

Fable Farm also has a venue and catering operation, as well as a fermentory, in town.

“They have brought lots of young people into Barnard,” Blanton said. “They have influenced this community in more ways than we even know. “Now, we have an opportunity to give back to these wonderful folks who have given so much to those in our local community and beyond.”
