Springfield — Voters at Town Meeting on Saturday approved a $1.43 million budget, a slight decrease over the current year, and the purchase of a new tanker truck for the fire department.

The article for the $240,000 truck, half of which town leaders expect to finance using existing funds, passed by paper ballot, 73-2.

The budget passed unanimously, according to the town clerk, as did a $4,000 appropriation for the Old Home Day Trust Fund that will come from the unreserved fund balance.

The only measure to fail, on a 58-14 vote, was a request to expand eligibility for a $500 tax credit to virtually all honorably discharged veterans or their surviving spouses.

Springfield offers the credit to veterans of certain qualifying wars and those whose military service ended because of a service-related disability.
