Voting to elect officers and amend the zoning ordinance is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, at the Orange Town House on Town House Road. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, Town Meeting will convene at the same location, following a potluck scheduled for 6 p.m.

Orange — Voters in Orange will be asked to approve a slight increase in the budget during Town Meeting for a software update at the Town Clerk’s office.

Officials are proposing a $234,291 budget for 2017, a roughly $7,000 increase over the past year.

If all warrant articles are approved, the amount to be raised in taxes will increase by almost $9,000.

Selectboard Chairwoman Dorothy Heinrichs said the town clerk currently works twice a week, but the system used to register vehicles doesn’t provide any technical support. So, the town is hoping to spend an additional $5,000 this year and upgrade the system with a private firm.

She said the town has a new reevaluation system, which added about $2,500 to the budget. Additional increases also are the result of salaries changed at the behest of a salary study committee.

Voters will see two warrant articles calling for the positions of cemetery agent and welfare agent to become appointed rather than elected. If the articles are approved, the change would take place in 2018.

This year, Heinrichs said, the welfare agent had to resign because of challenges with the position and the Selectboard hired a replacement with more experience. The Cemetery Trustees also had to find a new sextant after the elected one became ill, Heinrichs said.

“Because we are a town under 325 people you can’t always get people to fill (positions),” she said.

Also on the ballot are several warrant articles calling for funding to several capital reserve funds. If all of those articles are approved, $12,000 would go toward funds designated for future highway equipment, road improvements and reevaluations.
