West Lebanon
The Blue Hawks scored three power-play goals in five chances, including the winning tally with two minutes, 38 seconds remaining. That strike broke a 3-3 tie created when the Marauders’ Maddie Lyons scored with six minutes to play. Hanover trailed, 3-1, early in the third period.
“We were gassed and squeezed and things got a little desperate,” said Exeter coach Geoff Taylor, whose team spent the vast majority of the third period in its own end. “We’re not used to facing pressure like that. Most of the game we got rushed into untimely decisions.”
Blue Hawks goaltender Isabelle Day made 49 saves while Marauders counterpart Cici Barton stopped 14 shots. Hanover last lost to a Granite State opponent on Feb. 4, 2012, when it fell to Lebanon, 3-2.
“The penalties were the difference,” said Marauders coach John Dodds, whose team has won seven consecutive NHIAA titles and eight in the last nine years. “Obviously, we’re going to have to work on our penalty kill.”
The Blue Hawks (15-1) opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Hanover’s Mahler Meyerrose answered with a power-play goal two minutes later off a Clare Gardner pass. Exeter notched the second period’s only goal on the power play, then scored again with a player advantage 34 seconds into the final stanza.
Hanover pulled within 3-2 with 12 minutes to play on a Cate Wagner goal with assists from Briland Laycock and Gardner. Lyons forged a 3-3 tie during the period’s 10th minute, assists going to Hannah Curtis and Bryn Kable
Taylor said Exeter had never before beaten Hanover. Dodds noted that his team, which was 1 of 3 on the power play, hadn’t previously trailed by two goals this winter.
The Marauders are 13-1 in NHIAA play this season and 13-2 overall. Their combined overall record the past three seasons is 52-5-3.
