Lebanon, N.H. —
John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was stationed at Elmondorf Air Force Base in Alaska for the last two years he served. He retired after 42 years working for Dartmouth College. He was a member of the Lebanon Elks Club and loved playing cards and throwing horseshoes. His last few years have been spent stopping traffic and making sure the children of Lebanon got to school safely. He could be seen every morning in the rain, snow, and cold; always smiling. He spent many mornings having coffee with his buddies down at The Fort! He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Merrihew, whom he married in 1961. Together they have three children, Patricia (Patti) Pelton, John Jr. and his wife Krista, and Ellyn Phaneuf and her husband Michael. John and Betty have two grandchildren, Kyle and Kaitlyn Merrihew. Survivors also include his brother-in-law, Tom and his wife Gloria; sisters-in-law Terri and her husband Rick Granger, and Barbara St. Jean; sister Julia Strong and sisters-in-law Vi and Nancy Merrihew as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Albert, Vern, Thomas, Herbert, Harry, and Arthur, and sisters Martha and Grace.
His family was his world. He loved and cherished them and was very proud of all their accomplishments.
At John’s request, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of his wonderful life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
