Norwich — Jay Van Arman has been named 2017 Norwich Citizen of the Year by the Norwich Women’s Club. Van Arman will be honored at a spring gala on March 17 at 6 p.m. at Tracy Hall.

He is being recognized for his many contributions to the town over the past four decades, according to a news release from the club. Those include years of volunteering with the Norwich Lions Club, the Norwich Fire Department, and Meals on Wheels, and serving on the Selectboard, the Marion Cross School Board and the Zoning Board. He’s also driven a school bus and put flags out on Main Street for holidays, the release said

In his nomination, Van Arman was characterized as a “neighbor extraordinaire,” kind human being, citizen farmer and a “funny teller of innocent jokes” who is always ready with a smile and a wave.

Most important, he’s characterized as “the kind of person who enhances life in Norwich,” the release said.

The gala will include food, drink, and an auction featuring items from local businesses and individuals. Tickets are $45, or $85 for a couple. Proceeds will support the club’s Community Projects Fund, which pays for projects and improvements in the town. Last year’s grants totaled $30,000. To reserve a ticket, go to norwichwomensclub.org.

The event is co-sponsored by the Norwich Women’s Club and Ledyard National Bank. Van Arman will receive a $500 Ledyard Grant to give to the nonprofit of his choice.
