West Windsor — A small dam on the Mill Brook behind the fire department that was used by the former Ascutney Mountain Resort for snowmaking will be removed using a $22,000 grant from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources’ Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission announced receipt of the grant on Wednesday.

Cindy Ingersoll with SWCRPC said the concrete block dam is only a few feet high and engineering work for the removal has begun. The dam will likely be removed this summer, the commission said in a news release.

The commission also is working Fitzgerald Environmental Associates of Colchester, Vt., to develop alternatives for maintaining on-site water withdrawal by the fire department once the dam is gone. In another project related to the former resort, Ingersoll said, asbestos removal at the former ski area base lodge began this week. The lodge was gutted by fire last January. Once the asbestos is gone, the lodge will be demolished.
