Wells River — A mother who lost her son to addiction last summer will host a walk in Wells River this morning to educate people on the use and abuse of opioids.

Tari Labrecque has held several events to bring awareness of drug addiction after her son, Marcus Smith, lost his battle in July.

“We are walking to raise awareness of opiate use,” she said. “We have lost so many people, my son being one of them. My mission is to raise awareness of opiate addiction and stop people from falling through the cracks.”

The 34-year-old Smith, a graduate of Woodsville High School, overdosed just three hours after he left rehab. Labrecque has since undertaken a campaign to improve options for recovering addicts who have completed rehabilitation programs.

The event will start at 9 a.m. today at the Wells River Congregational Church on Main Street.
