Newport — A fire at 6 Cottage St. on Friday afternoon injured one person who was found lying on the ground outside the home when fire personnel arrived.

Fire officials did not release the name of the person, who was first taken to New London Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

According to a news release from the Newport Fire Department, the fire was called in just after 4:30 p.m.

The first fire officer on the scene discovered one person outside on the ground and smoke coming from the eaves and second floor of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
