Waterbury, Vt.
Kuhn scored her 12th goal of the season and ninth in the Wasps’ last four games just shy of two minutes into overtime on Monday night to give Woodstock a 2-1 win over Harwood at the Ice Center. The score capped a wild end of the contest for the Wasps (5-2-1), who maintained second place in Vermont Division II with the victory.
Woodstock and the Highlanders (1-4-1) came within 2½ minutes of taking a scoreless tie into overtime. Harwood finally broke through on the power play with a Celia Lawton goal with 2:28 to go in regulation. But the Highlanders drew a minor penalty moments later, and Khara Brettell made them pay with a man-up goal on a Hannah Coates assist just 51 seconds later.
Kuhn then sent Woodstock home a winner by converting passes from Coates and Lizzy Peck at 1:53 of the extra session. The point was a career first for Peck, a freshman who recently joined the Wasps.
“It was exciting to watch,” Woodstock coach Ian Coates said. “(The Highlanders) played some pretty good defense. You look at the shots, and we got a lot of shots, but there were a lot of opportunities missed because they had a good defense on the blue line and we had a hard time getting by that defense.”
Bridgit Black made 25 saves for the Wasps, who owned a 31-26 edge in shots on goal. Woodstock takes on No. 3 U-32 on Saturday.
