Hanover — Being down a pair of starters didn’t do much to deter the Stevens High boys basketball team in the Connecticut River Shootout against Woodsville on Wednesday night at Hanover High.

Zach O’Brien and Noah Spaulding scored 16 points each and Richard Bell netted a season-high 10 as the Cardinals won in a battle of unbeatens against the Engineers, 57-50.

Stevens played without forward Henri Bourque (8.3 points per game) and senior guard Parker Smith (6.7 ppg), but overcame an 18-5 first-quarter deficit to improve to 5-0 overall. The Cardinals are 3-0 in NHIAA Division III.

Garrett Olsen netted 15 points and Cooper Davidson had 12 for the Engineers (5-1; 4-0 NHIAA D-IV).

Bourque and Smith were both absent from the nonleague games due to holiday vacations.

“I think it says a lot about our depth,” said Cardinals coach Matt Baird-Torney, whose team faced a four-point halftime deficit before outscoring Woodsville in the third quarter, 18-10. “We only played eight guys tonight. (Woodsville) started off playing strong on the post in the first quarter. Eventually we got a little three-quarters-court (pressure) going and got our transition game going.”

Due to today’s snowstorm forecast, the tournament’s final games have been moved from this evening until Friday.

Franklin and Woodsville will not be returning, while Stevens takes on Mascoma.

“We had 13 turnovers in the first half and eight of (Mascoma’s) 15 points in the second quarter came off of turnovers,” Hanover coach Tim Winslow said. “In the second half, we did a better job taking care of the ball and getting it to the open man.”

Alex Schwarz scored 13 points for Mascoma (1-4, 1-2 NHIAA Division III).

The Royals face Stevens at 5:30 and Hanover takes on Littleton at 7 in the final games of the tournament on Friday.
