Newbury, Vt. — Preliminary autopsy results on Wednesday confirmed that a well-regarded Newbury couple died in a murder-suicide.

Kenneth Walsh, 80, shot his wife Barbara, 76, and then turned the gun on himself, according to a Vermont State Police news release. Her death was categorized as a homicide, his as a suicide, the release said.

The bodies of the couple were found late Monday night in their home on Welch Road.

Kenneth Welch was a longtime school bus driver in the Newbury and Oxbow school districts; Barbara Welch had been the town clerk in Newbury for more than 30 years before she retired in 2002.

Calling hours for the couple will be held on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Ricker Funeral Home in Woodsville.
