Concord — The New Hampshire Soccer Coaches Association has selected Stevens’ Jason Stone as its New Hampshire Division III boys soccer coach of the year for guiding the Cardinals to within a game of their first state title since 1989.

Stone fronted a list that included coach of the year honors for a pair of area junior varsity mentors.

The Cardinals lost their opening game of the season, then reeled off 14 consecutive victories to earn the third seed in the NHIAA D-III tournament. Stevens bounced Sanborn, Campbell and Belmont in the postseason before dropping a 1-0 decision to Hopkinton in the Nov. 5 final at Southern New Hampshire University.

The championship game trip was Stevens’ first since the Cardinals’ 2-0 win over Oyster River in the 1989 Class I final. The Cards made this year’s run on attack, scoring 98 goals over 20 matches.

Three Cardinals earned all-state mentions. Junior forward Noah Spaulding (33 goals, 21 assists) made the first team, while senior defender Logan Bonneau and senior midfielder Ethan Sweet (20-13—33) made the second team. They were joined by Mascoma second-team forward Tucker Stenger (24-12—36) and two honorable mentions, Mascoma middie Alex Schwarz (8-16—24) and Newport middie Brenden Halleck, the top scorer on a program making its return to varsity status after a long hiatus.

Two area junior varsity coaches were also chosen as the top performers in their divisions. Hanover’s Peter Krass drew notice in girls Division II, while Elizabeth Whalley was selected in boys Division IV.
