Local Roundup: Dartmouth Soccer Bags NCAA Bid

Hanover — Chad Riley is making a habit of taking his Dartmouth College men’s soccer team to the NCAA tournament.

The Big Green’s fourth-year coach made it three straight trips to the NCAAs as Ivy League champion with Saturday’s 2-0 blanking of Brown at Whitey Burnham Field. Dartmouth (8-4-5 overall, 5-1-1 league), at a minimum, will share Ivy honors with Columbia, which plays Cornell today. But the Big Green will get the league’s automatic NCAA berth by virtue of beating the Lions in New York, 1-0, back on Oct. 22.

“You get so into the game at hand that it’s hard to let it really sink in for a little bit, but I’m really proud of the group,” Riley said in a news release. “It’s been one of the most challenging schedules in recent years. I think they battled really well and weren’t really given much this year. We’re playing our best soccer now.”

Goalkeeper James Hickok needed just two saves for his 10th shutout of the season. Dartmouth, which has allowed just 12 goals in 17 matches, last surrendered a goal with 18:19 left in a 4-1 win over Penn on Oct. 15, a stretch that now covers 560 minutes, 13 seconds.

Noah Paravicini put the Big Green on the board at 41:19 with his fourth goal of the season. Paravcini knocked in a pass from teammate Emmanuel Arteaga for the only lead Dartmouth would need.

Matt Danilack doubled Dartmouth’s edge at 67:46, converting feeds from Justin Donawa and Eduvie Ikoba.

Riley’s last two Big Green squads reached the national tournament by claiming at least a share of the Ivy title.

Last year’s squad knocked off Hartwick in the first round before dropping a 2-1 second-rounder at Syracuse. The 2014 team also opened with a win at home, beating Fordham, 2-1, before sustaining a 3-0 loss at Providence three days later.

The NCAA field will be revealed on Monday.

Hanover — A backhander by senior Eleni Tebano with 57.7 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Dartmouth (1-5-0, 1-4-0) over No. 10 Princeton (4-3-1, 2-3-1) to give Big Green coach Laura Schuler her first win as head coach of the program.

“I am really excited for our girls,” Schuler said in a news release. “They played their hearts out today, and they really committed to buying into the game plan and they found a way to win.”

Seven Dartmouth players ended the game with a point. Senior Emma Korbs and freshman Rose Falzone got the first two goals, while senior Kennedy Ottenbreit and freshmen Sabrina Huett and Sydney Hill picked up assists. Junior Morgan Turner assisted on the game-winner. Huett is a Plainfield native.

Dartmouth senior goalie Robyn Chemago ended with 45 saves. Princeton’s Alysia DaSilva stopped 22 shots.

Karlie Lund scored both Princeton goals.

Princeton, n.j. — The host Tigers (0-3-1 league, 0-4-1 overall) twice rallied from a goal down to get their first ECAC Hockey point of the year in a tie with the Big Green (1-1-2, 2-1-2).

Cam Strong gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the first period, one Princeton erased on the first of Eric Robinson’s two goals on the night early in the middle stanza.

The Big Green re-established the lead through John Ernsting in the final three minutes of the second period only to have Robinson notch his second of the evening before the final period was six minutes old.

Devin Buffalo stopped 22 shots for Dartmouth, which visits Vermont on Tuesday night.

Women’s VolleyballYale 3, Dartmouth 2

Hanover — Dartmouth fell to Yale in five sets (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 13-25, 15-13) on senior day.

The Big Green, which overcame a 2-0 start to the match to force a fifth set, concluded the season with an overall record of 9-16 and 2-12 in Ivy League play, while the Bulldogs improved to 18-5 and 11-3.

Dartmouth freshman Maddy Schoenberger ended the night with 13 assists and 12 digs. Senior Emily Astarita had 11 kills, while classmate Molly Kornfeind was right behind with 10.

Fellow senior Julia Lau had a season-high 23 digs.

Women’s RugbyAIC 33, Dartmouth 29

Springfield, Mass. — The Big Green saw its season come to a close in a loss to the Yellowjackets in the quarterfinals of the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association tournament at American International’s Ronald J. Abdow Field.

AIC advances to the NIRA semifinals at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point next weekend.

Dartmouth, which opened its season with a 24-22 defeat of the Yellowjackets (4-5) back on Sept. 3, closes its second varsity campaign at 7-2.

North Scituate, r.i. — Hanover’s Leila Trummel earned a top-50 finish and Oxbow’s Izzy Giesing posted a personal-best time in their final high school race of the season, Saturday’s New England Championships at Ponaganset High School.

Trummel, a sophomore, took 44th overall in a time of 19 minutes, 12.51 seconds in her first New England meet. Teammate Lucy Glueck also competed, finishing in 25:52.42.

Giesing placed 69th overall and 10th among Vermont girls with a time of 19:31.85, Giesing’s first time breaking the 20-minute barrier. She finished well ahead of her Vermont Division III rivals, Rice’s Konnie Wendeln (116th, 20:05) and BFA-Fairfax’s Katie Brown (126th, 20:12). Jacqueline Gaughan, of Exeter N.H., ran the course in 17:34 to earn the win.

Hanover’s Morgan Baughman was the sole Upper Valley representative in the boys’ race. The junior claimed 124th place with a time of 17:01.90 to finish in the top half of the pack. David Principe Jr., of Rhode Island’s La Salle Academy, won in 15:13.39.

Meriden — Despite taking almost 30 shots, KUA couldn’t break through Vermont’s solid back line and excellent goalkeeping. KUA (13-2-2) will next play in the NEPSAC tournament.

H.S. Boys SoccerKUA 3, VA 1

Meriden — Sophomore Ben Tardiff scored three goals to lead the Wildcats over Vermont Academy.

Tucker Williams, Thomas Pierce and Hart Jamieson assisted.

KUA (9-5-2) is hoping to be selected for the NEPSAC tournament, which starts on Wednesday at a site to be determined.

Hanover High sophomore Leila Trummel placed 44th in Saturday’s New England Cross Country Championship in North Scituate, R.I., with a time of 19 minutes, 12.51 seconds to rank 15th among all Granite Staters and ninth among all sophomores in a field of 261 runners. Freshman teammate Lucy Glueck completed the 5-kilometer course in 25:52.42, after having been slowed during the race because of an illness. The two athletes’ results were reversed in an earlier version of this roundup because of a scoring error at the race.
