Springfield, Vt.
The Springfield Fire Department responded to Mary Soubble’s Birch Court home around 3:30 a.m. for a report of fire and smoke coming from the building, according to a news release.
Soubble and four other people were inside at the time of the fire; one of them was transported to Springfield Hospital for precautionary reasons, Fire Chief Russ Thompson said on Tuesday. That individual is doing OK, the chief said.
The home is uninhabitable, and the Red Cross is assisting the family.
An investigation revealed the fire likely started from the outside. Though Thompson said he has an idea of how the fire started, he said that information is being withheld at this time.
The home had working smoke detectors, which were “credited with notifying the occupants in time to safely escape,” the release said.
