Richard Coleman took a plea agreement in Windsor Superior Court and will be sentenced at a later date.
The plea deal calls for a 15- to 30-year sentence, with a portion of that time suspended on probation for an indefinite term, Windsor County State’s Attorney David Cahill said. A judge will determine how much time is suspended after he or she receives a pre-sentence investigation report, which is due in early January.
A contested sentencing hearing will then be held.
As part of the plea agreement, the state dismissed the stiffest charge Coleman faced — repeated aggravated sexual assault — a felony that carries a maximum term of life in person. By pleading guilty to the seven charges, Coleman admitted he had inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of 16 on two occasions, and also possessed five pieces of child pornography on a hard drive.
As a general policy, the Valley News doesn’t identify the victims of sex crimes. The victim was known to Coleman. Coleman is being held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., until his sentencing hearing.
