Vershire, Vt. — Floyd S. “Butch” Mattoon, Jr.,69, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. after a long illness.

He was born June 26, 1947, in Lebanon, the son of Floyd S. and Alice (Towle) Mattoon. He attended school in Vershire and later Thetford, where he graduated in 1965 from Thetford Academy. Following high school he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On Dec. 16, 1972, he married Diane Winget in Orford, N.H. They lived all their married life in Vershire where they raised their children. Diane died Feb. 9, 2001.

Floyd worked a few years for Trumbull Nelson Construction in Lebanon, before retiring at age 27 due to illness. Since then he has kept busy making rolltop desks. He also enjoyed eating at the Weathervane Restaurant in Lebanon, and the Wayside Restaurant in Barre, Vt., and fishing on Miller Pond. He was a member of the Vershire Bible Church. He was a friendly and kind soul and never complained throughout all of his years of not being well.

He is survived by a son, David Mattoon of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two daughters, Donna Harley of Chelsea, Vt., and Ginger Reade of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; a brother, Carroll Mattoon of Newbury, Vt.; a sister, Ann Broadbent of West Fairlee, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Diane Mattoon and a sister, Geraldine Gendron.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a time of remembrance at 7 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 VT RT 110, Chelsea, Vt. Private burial will be held at a later date in the Vershire Village Cemetery.
