New London, N.H. —
Win was born on Nov. 17, 1931, in Providence, R.I., the son of Leslie Thurber Chase and Mary Lyon Chase. He graduated from St. George’s School in Middletown, R.I., and Brown University. He then enlisted in the Army, studied Czech-Slovak at the Army Language School in Monterey, California and served as a translator for the Army Security Agency in Frankfort, Germany, where he also married his wife, Barbara Sullivan of Lebanon, Conn.
Upon his return from Germany, Win entered Harvard Business School, graduating in 1958. He first worked as a CPA , eventually settled the family in Cumberland, R.I., and went to work for Crosby Ashton Valve & Gage in Wrentham, Mass., first as Comptroller and later as a partner and Financial Vice-President.
In 1989, Win and Barbara moved to New London where the family had owned a ski house for several years. Win engaged in a variety of consulting jobs and community activities, was a nine year member of the Kearsarge Area School Budget Committee, Treasurer of the Upper Valley Music Center, and an active member of SCORE in Lebanon. He also had numerous enthusiasms including camping, hiking, bicycling, skiing, tennis and horseback riding. Perhaps most of all, he loved history and historical novels and was able to complete a historical novel of his own this past year.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Jacqueline Buchin, of Newton, Mass; his sons, Curtis of Pelham, N.Y., Andy of Portola Valley, Calif., and Peter of Sharon, Mass.; and nine grandchildren: Kira, Emma, Kendall, Patrick, Zachary, Nicholas, Hadley, Cecily, and Lydia. He is remembered by all as a consummate gentleman, peppered with a dry wit.
A reception for Win will be held at the Lake Sunapee Country Clubhouse at 12 noon, Saturday, Oct. 15.
