Hanover, N.H. —
Charlie was born in Boston on Aug. 23, 1930, to Isabelle Hayes and Herbert Aldrich Breed. He grew up in Melrose, Mass. Of old Yankee stock, he was pleased when people knew that the Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought below, on Breed’s Hill.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1951 and went on to achieve his Masters degree in Geology from The University of Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army in Intelligence during the Korean War.
Charlie is survived by Sarah Priest Breed, his wife of over 30 years. He is also survived by two daughters from his first marriage to Marilyn Sargent Breed: Deborah L. Harris of Park Ridge, Ill. and Beverly B. Balch of Hanover; his son, Alan Hayes Breed, predeceased him in 2001, and his only sister, Barbara Anderson Kerin in 2015. Also surviving him are two step-daughters, Katherine F. Pisano of Baltimore, and Margaret L. Fonyo of St. Louis; as well as eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His career was in Educational Development with institutions and private clients.
The expert guidance he gave to their constituencies in organizing their own volunteer “fundraising and friendraising” efforts was sensitive and successful. These included: Director of Annual Fund, Dartmouth College; National Consultant, Kersting Brown (NYC); Director of Development, Harvard Business School; U.S. Consultant, The John Templeton School of Business at Oxford University; Capital Campaign Consultant, The Norman Rockwell Museum (Stockbridge, Mass.).
Charlie’s devotion to Dartmouth College included 18 years of announcing home football games at Memorial Stadium, and playing the saxophone with his band, The Mink Brook Five, at countless reunions and other Dartmouth events. Above all, his many friends will remember his pleasant voice, his mellow sax, his intelligence, and cheerful, friendly presence.
