Lebanon — A 22-year-old West Lebanon woman who police say shook and critically injured her boyfriend’s 19-month-old daughter is being held on bail.

Kayla L. Cassady allegedly shook the child so “severely” that she caused “a large internal bleed on her brain,” according to an affidavit filed on Friday in Lebanon District Court.

“Upon her arrival at the hospital, it was determined that she was having difficulty with movement on the right side of her body and her pupils were unequal,” a Lebanon police officer wrote in the affidavit. “These were reported as all symptoms of the internal bleed.”

The girl underwent surgery to stop the bleeding, the affidavit says.

Cassady answered to the charge in Lebanon District Court on Friday and a judge ordered her held on $2,000 cash or corporate surety bail. The judge also instituted $10,000 personal recognizance bail at the hearing.

As of Friday night, Cassady hadn’t made bail and was lodged at the Grafton County House of Corrections.

Lebanon police say they responded to an apartment on Pine Tree Lane on Thursday afternoon for a report of a young female who was not alert.

Cassady told police she had been caring for the child at the time, and said the girl appeared to suffer an unknown medical problem, according to a police news release issued on Friday.

Though Cassady initially denied causing any trauma to the child, further investigation revealed she allegedly shook the child in a “front to back motion,” the affidavit states.

Cassady is the girlfriend of the child’s biological father, who wasn’t present during the alleged assault, according to police.

She has a probable cause hearing scheduled for Oct. 18 in the Lebanon courthouse.
