White River Junction — To celebrate homecoming and senior night for its football team, Hartford High staged a fireworks display during halftime against Mount Anthony on Friday night. By then, the Hurricanes had already shown something similar on the field.

Tyler Hamilton’s 45-yard interception return for a touchdown on the first drive of the game set the tone for a dominant performance, the first of four takeaways by the Canes’ defense in a 47-3 rout of the Patriots.

Hartford (5-1 overall) improved to 5-0 in Vermont Division I play, setting up a showdown for first place at St. Johnsbury next week. The Hilltoppers are also 5-0 entering today’s game at Rice.

Nine running backs accumulated 388 yards and five touchdowns for Hartford, and quarterback Gavin Farnsworth hit fellow senior Jack Wozniak for a 9-yard touchdown on his only throw of the game.

Not including penalties, the Hurricanes held Mount Anthony to just 42 yards of offense, sacking quarterback Ryan O’Neill (7-for-20, 54 yards) three times for negative-16 yards and getting 20 points off of three interceptions.

One week after forcing four turnovers at Rice, Hartford’s defense was relentless for the ball once again. Two possessions after Hamilton’s pick-six, sophomore Nick Porter intercepted O’Neill in stride for a 36-yard return, setting up Brett MacLaren’s 13-yard touchdown run on the next play.

Cornerback Farnsworth picked O’Neill off again on the first play of the second quarter, and again it took just one play for dividends as Hunter Perkins took it 45 yards up the middle. By then the rout was in full swing at 40-3.

Linebacker Wozniak got in on the fun in the second half, stripping receiver Cole Bushee.

“I’d say our biggest strength right now is our defense,” said Farnsworth, Hartford’s strong-side corner. “We returned nine starters on that side of the ball (from last year’s team), so we’ve got a lot of experience together containing and making reads.”

While Hamilton’s tone-setter came off of a deflection, being in the right position to pick it out of the air was no happenstance. The junior has been spot-on in coverage all season thanks to extra preparation.

“Tyler is a leader back there and really understands coverages, spends a lot of time watching film,” Hartford coach Matt Trombly said. “We have film sessions twice per week, and they can access it on their own. Tyler does that and I think it shows.”

Hamilton also rushed for 77 yards on just three carries, including a 34-yard touchdown. He was one of five Hurricane running backs to score one touchdown, joining Perkins (two carries, 61 yards), Justin Koloski (six carries, 48 yards), Porter (two carries, 43 yards) and MacLaren (three carries, 23 yards).

Hartford’s backs combined to average 11.1 yards per carry, while only one Mount Anthony rusher, senior fullback Ian Doucette (three carries, four yards) had any positive yardage.

Even after a performance like Friday’s, the Hurricanes appear anything but satisfied. As he has following big wins all season, Trombly was quick to emphasize that no game is perfect.

Hartford had its share of penalties to exemplify that, including back-to-back personal fouls on a Patriots’ first-quarter drive that set up a 27-yard O’Neill field goal.

“Penalties have been a problem for us for the last two years, and it’s something we’re still trying to correct,” Trombly said. “Mount Anthony is a rebuilding team, and we were able to get a way with a few things tonight that we won’t be able to against over the next two weeks.”

Led by former Castleton University coach Rich Alercio and dynamic quarterback Collin Urie, the Hilltoppers next week figure to be Hartford’s biggest test of the season, last month’s 34-6 nonleague loss to Massachusetts Division I Catholic Memorial nonwithstanding.

The Hurricanes wrap up the regular season at arch-rival Rutland a week later.

“The meat of our schedule is really here over the last two games,” Trombly said. “We’re going to have to play with real purpose.”
