Chelsea — Freshman Sienna Carter had just what the Rivendell Academy girls soccer team needed — speed, and lots of it — to help snap its three-game losing streak.

Carter, a midfielder, twice used breakneck quickness to overlap Chelsea defenders and deposit her first two career goals in Friday’s 3-0 win over the Red Devils.

Carter scored in the 15th and 34th minutes to stake the Raptors (2-3) to a 2-0 halftime lead, assisted on the first by Mikayla DeBois and the second via one-timer on a feed from Riley Thomson.

“She’s very active both offensively and defensively; she’s all over the place,” said Rivendell coach Tim Goodwin of Carter. “She’s fast, strong and a good worker.”

DeBois, who’d hit the crossbar several times, finally solved Red Devils keeper Kiana Johnson in the 76th minute for the clincher. Thomson assisted again.

“(DeBois) got around two defenders on the weak side and hit a really pretty shot,” Goodwin said.

Rivendell led 18-11 in shots.

Sophomore goalie Shaunna Simmons stopped all 11 from Chelsea, many sent in by junior Tucker Chapin.

Rivendell is off until next Saturday, when it begins a three-game homestand against Craftsbury.

Newport 4, Bishop Brady 1

Newport — Hannah Stark netted a hat trick and Rachel Stark had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who trailed 1-0 early.

Anna Pysz made 10 saves for Newport, which is off until visiting Fall Mountain next Saturday.

Woodsville 5, Canaan-Pittsburg 0

Woodsville — Molly Clough scored three of her four goals in the first half as the Engineers (2-5-1) snapped a two-game skid.

Suzanne Bazzell added a goal and two assists and defender Jasmine Smith added an assist for Woodsville, while goalie McKenzie Dennis was called on for two saves, one in each half.

The Engineers visit Profile on Tuesday.

Lake Region 3, Oxbow 1

Bradford, Vt. — The Rangers built a 3-0 lead and dropped the Olympians to 1-5 in advance of a long stretch of road games.

“We had some technical breakdowns today and were beaten to the ball. Lake Region played really well,” Oxbow coach Charlie Barton said.

Zoe Barton scored unassisted for the O’s four minutes into the second half. Keeper Kaysea Neil had 10 saves. The Olympians visit Danville on Tuesday for the first of six straight games on the road.

Stevens 7, Monadnock 2

East Swanzey, n.h. — Jaz Griffin scored five goals to help the Cardinals (6-3) to a dominant victory over the Huskies.

Kelsey Belisle and Sydney Miller also scored. Griffin, Belisle and Julia Belaire added assists. The Cardinals led 4-1 at halftime. Keeper Amber Duford had eight saves for Stevens, which plays at InterLakes on Tuesday.

Black River 2, Windsor 1

Windsor — Despite controlling possession for long stretches, the Yellowjackets came out on the short end against the visiting Presidents.

“It was one of those games where you play well, execute well but just don’t get the results you were looking for,” Windsor coach Bruce Mackay said. “We dictated play and had a lot of opportunities. Just didn’t put shots on the net.”

The Presidents scored early before Annie Soho had an equalizer for the Jacks. Olivia Rockwood assisted and the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into halftime. Black River scored the game-winner on a breakaway midway through the second half.

Freshman goalie Hannah Kemp had three saves for the Jacks. Windsor (1-5) hosts Green Mountain on Tuesday.

John Stark 1, Hanover 0

Weare, n.h. — The Generals again solved the Marauders, dropping the visitors by a 1-0 score for the second time this season.

Hanover (6-2) dropped an identical decision to John Stark at home on Sept. 6 before running off four straight wins ahead of this rematch. The Generals scored on a free kick midway through the second half. Offensive opportunities were hard to come by with the teams tying at just five shots apiece.

Keeper Mahler Meyerrose had four saves for the Marauders. Coach Doug Kennedy praised the play of Cate Wagner and Mindy Wu. Hanover hosts Lebanon on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer Stevens 5, Mascoma 3

West Canaan — The Cardinals (8-1) won their eighth in a row while the Royals evened off at 4-4-1.

Drew Grenier and Noah Spaulding each scored twice and Mitchell Paquette had three assists for Stevens.

Coby Hussey added a helper for the Cards.

Dartangnan Collins set up all three of Mascoma’s scores, assisting on goals by Tucker Stenger, James Disbrow and Alex Schwarz.

Tanner Durkee made four saves for Stevens and Hunter Whyte made seven for the Royals, who visit InterLakes on Wednesday.

Stevens hosts Monadnock on Tuesday.

Whitcomb-Rochester 1Danville 0 (2 OT)

Danville, Vt. — Zak Gillette’s free-kick goal with 28 seconds left in double overtime propelled the Mountaineers (3-2) to the win.

“It was a bit of a tough game for us, but we snuck out of there with a win,” said Whitchester coach Corey Stearns. “Our defense did well; Danville didn’t have many legitimate scoring opportunities.”

Isaac Hodgdon made five saves for the Mountaineers, who led 16-8 in shots.

Whitcomb-Rochester hosts South Royalton in Rochester on Tuesday.

Woodsville 8Pittsburg-Canaan 0

Woodsville — A quartet of two-goal scorers led the Engineers (6-2) in their first shutout of the season.

Antonio Houde continued his strong play with two goals and two assists. Adam Cataldo added a pair of goals and one assist. Garrett Olsen and Sam Pushee each had two goals. Alex Enderson added three assists.

Coach Mike Ackerman praised the effort of sweeper Seth Hannett and the rest of the Woodsville fullbacks for helping to limit Pittsburg-Canaan to just two shots on goal. Keepers Cooper Davidson and Jason Turner split time in net for the Engineers.

“I’m most pleased with this being our first shutout. Defensively we were really solid. We’ve been scoring quite a few but giving up quite a few, too,” Ackerman said.

Woodsville visits Profile on Tuesday.

Hanover 4, Merrimack 0

Merrimack, n.h. — Henry Kahl had a goal and two assists to pace the Marauders in a shutout of the Tomahawks.

Luke Messersmith and Casey Starr both scored in the first half for Hanover; each on assists from Kahl. The Marauders led 2-0 at halftime.

Kahl added a free kick from long range for a goal early after the break. Bauti Gallino then intercepted a long ball from the Merrimack keeper and sent a shot back into an empty net to close the scoring.

Hanover keeper Pat Logan had two saves to anchor the Marauders defense, which now has three straight shutouts.

“Our defense has improved with every game. Sam Pych and Will Smith have been playing particularly well on defense,” Hanover coach Rob Grabill said.

The Marauders (7-1) visit Bishop Guertin on Friday.

Stowe 7, Thetford 0

Stowe, Vt. — The Raiders broke things open with five goals in the second half to drop the Panthers to 4-2.

Stowe took control with four goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. Thetford keepers Anthony Stoffel and Cordell Benjamin combined for eight saves. The Panthers host U-32 on Monday.

Football Woodstock 77, Spaulding 0

Woodstock — The undefeated Wasps (4-0) romped past the Crimson Tide.

“Everybody played a role in this one,” said Woodstock coach Ramsey Worrell.

The Wasps scored touchdowns on their first two offensive plays, quarterback Luc Issa finding Patrick Potter for the first score before Bill Wood rushed in from 45 yards out for the second.

“He broke five tackles and probably ran another 35 yards running (east-to-west) Worrell noted. “It was that kind of game.”

Wood, who doubles as a cornerback, had an interception return for a touchdown, one of four pickoffs by Woodstock. Potter, Alex Blaiklock and Micah Schlabach had the others.

Running back Dan Robinson and fullback Ezra Astbury also had productive games for the Wasps, who visit Mill River on Friday night.

U-32 56, Oxbow 14

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians fell to 1-3 in their first-ever home night game.

Playing for injured QB Damettres Perry, Oxbow junior Noah Johnson threw a touchdown pass to tight end Orin Mahikoa and rushed for another score.

Owen Pelletier kicked two extra points for Oxbow, which visits Springfield on Friday.

Bennington, Vt. — Brooke Hurd’s goal two minutes into the game was all the Hurricanes could muster, and the Patriots tied it during the second half.

Rachel Loseby made two saves for the Canes (5-1-1), who host Rutland on Monday.

Lebanon 4, Windham 1

Lebanon — The Raiders (3-3) wasted no time early with four goals in the first half to hand the previously unbeaten Jaguars (7-1) their first loss of the season.

“This was a turnaround game for us. Everyone played their best game of the season so far,” Lebanon coach Deb Beach said.

Hannah Bunten had a hat trick and Molly Pelletier also scored. Bunten’s first came five minutes into the game with an assist to Leah Mayes. Meredith Melendy and Maddie Hastings also had assists.

Goalie Hope Brown finished with 13 saves, most of which came in the second half as the Jaguars went on the offensive in attempt to claw back into the game. Emily Hunnewell played a strong game the anchor the Raiders’ defense.

Lebanon hosts Kingswood on Monday.

Hanover 4, Milford 2

Milford, n.h. — The Marauders evened off at 4-4.

Diana Schwarz had two goals and an assist and Natalie Smith and Isabelle Sangha added a goal each for Hanover.

Allyce Good had an assist and goalie Sophie Cardenali made five stops for the Marauders, who play the last of three in a row on the road Monday at Kennett.

Tilton 3, KUA 2 (OT)

Meriden — The Wildcats lost an overtime thriller under the lights when the Rams scored on a rebound for the game-winner.

Molly Flanagan scored an early equalizer for KUA with assists to Maddy Gesner and Liz Colannino to knot the score at 1-1 after just six minutes of action. The Rams answered just before halftime to re-take the lead.

Colannino brought things back to even with a goal after the break on an assist from Amalie Ball. Goalie Sofia Di Antonio had 11 saves for the Wildcats, who play host to Vermont Academy today.

Volleyball Mid Vermont Christian 3 Harwood 0

Moretown, Vt. — The Eagles beat the Highlanders in three close sets, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23.

Emily Jasmin had 19 assists and four aces, Taylor Paquette had 10 kills, four digs and three aces and Rachel Seale had nine kills, three digs and fives aces for Mid Vermont, which visits Mount Mansfield on Tuesday.

Winnisquam 3, Mascoma 0

West Canaan — The Bears prevailed by scores of 25-4, 25-15 and 25-4.

The Royals (1-5) host Newfound on Monday.

John Stark 3, Hanover 0

Weare, n.h. — The Marauders lost in straight sets, falling 25-15, 26-24 and 25-12 to the Generals. Hanover (1-6) hosts Plymouth on Monday.

College VolleyballHarvard 3, Dartmouth 0

Hanover — The Big Green dropped a tight battle in their Ivy League season opener, falling to the Crimson in straight sets (27-25, 25-16, 25-23).

Sara Lindquist had a team-leading 12 kills along with five digs and two block assists to lead Dartmouth.

The Big Green drops to 6-5 overall and will visit Penn and Princeton on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
