Sunapee, N.H. —
He attended elementary and junior high school in Larchmont, N.Y. before entering Phillips Andover Academy with the class of 1947. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army for two years thereafter. He joined New York Telephone in 1953 and stayed within the Bell System for 30 years.
Les and his wife of 65 years, Lib (Elizabeth Day) made their home in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. before their retirement to Sunapee in 1984.
Upon retirement Les dove with great enthusiasm into numerous philanthropic and civic commitments. He and Lib became members of the Newport Refugee Resettlement Committee and taught ESL to a Cambodian family, with whom they became lifelong friends, and for which Les received a N.H. Public Television Quiet Hero Award.
He was an active volunteer at the Newport Food Pantry, served extensively at South Congregational Church in Newport, Chaired the Newport Area Association of Churches, was a Trustee and Vice-Chair of Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice, a Trustee of New London Hospital, and member of the Board of Corporators of Capitol Region Healthcare. He volunteered for the Dartmouth Track and Field program as Head Field Referee and Chairman of the Track and Field Officials Association.
He also participated in the New Hampshire Senior Games in Track and Field and won a silver medal in discus and two gold medals in shot put and javelin.

In addition to his wife Lib, Les leaves his brother Chris; his children, Louise McMahon (husband Paul, deceased), Jeffrey (wife Margaret Ehleben) and Liza (husband William Near); eight truly and deeply adoring grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
A celebration honoring Les Sherrill’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church, 82 King Hill Rd., New London, N.H.
