White River Junction — The Hartford High field hockey team peppered visiting Hanover with shots — particularly on penalty corners — during Tuesday’s game against the Marauders. Freshman Kennedy Mullen made sure at least one of the opportunities bore fruit.

Mullen’s first career goal came on a penalty-corner feed from defender Caitlin Gaudet with three minutes to play in the first half, standing as the winner as the Hurricanes held on, 1-0.

Hartford (3-0) stayed undefeated with the win while the Marauders slipped to 2-3.

“We kind of dominated the first half, but Hanover’s goalie (Sophie Cardenali) did a good job making saves and clearing it out of the circle,” said Hartford coach Heath Haskell, whose team led 22-3 in PCs for the game. “We kept being super aggressive and it was a nice one-touch by Kennedy to finally put us ahead.”

The Hurricanes held steady in the second half, with defenders Morgan Fisk, Gaudet and Karen Cross not allowing much penetration.

“Neither team played particularly amazing; I’m not sure if both teams were a little bit nervous or what,” Haskell said. “I was never really concerned we were going to lose, but wanted to avoid overtime.”

Cardenali stopped 18 Hartford shots, Haskell said, while Rachel Loseby was called on only for a pair for Hartford.

The Canes are back at home Thursday against Marble Valley League rival Springfield. The Marauders return to NHIAA Division II action Thursday, hosting Merrimack Valley.

Women’s TennisNg and Mathis Ranked No. 10

Hanover — Dartmouth senior Taylor Ng and junior Kristina Mathis are ranked No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Preseason Doubles Rankings that were released on Tuesday.

They were the only Ivy League pair to make it into the rankings.

Ng and Mathis went 14-2 at No. 1 doubles in 2016, falling only to Boston University’s Johanna Hyoty and Sabrina Faybysehv in February and Arizona State’s Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho at the duo’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Doubles Championship in May.

The Big Green doubles team was ranked for the entirety of the three-month season, and stood at No. 20 when the NCAA selections were made.

This is the second highest Ng and Mathis have been ranked; for four matches that spanned from Feb. 13 -Feb. 21, they were seventh in the country.

Dartmouth opens its fall portion of the season this weekend when it travels to Virginia for the Tribe Invitational, hosted by William & Mary.
