West Canaan
“It was just a great high school football game,” Mascoma head coach Les Lawrence said. “Our backs ran hard, it was a very evenly matched game. But there were a lot of injuries. I think both teams came out thinking, ‘Look, we’ve got a real shot here.’ It was very, very physical.”
Lawrence said several of his players needed further medical attention after the game and were taken to local hospitals. The fear, he said, is that they might miss significant time.
Still, getting the first win out of the way was an important step for his team to take.
“I think the difference was our kids were able to keep our composure,” he said. “They were able to play as a team.”
The Royals (1-1) host Monadnock next week.
Thetford
The Panthers spent much of the first half in Oxbow’s defensive half, forcing the Olympians to sit back and wait for their chance. Thetford took 21 shots on Oxbow goalkeeper Kaysea Neil.
Emerson broke through off a corner kick, heading a lob into the box by senior Regan Covey.
The Panthers (2-0) travel to Blue Mountain on Tuesday. Oxbow (0-2) hosts Lyndon on Tuesday.
Wells River
Sarah Britton scored twice and Dani Dube netted another for Woodsville, all in the second half. Britton opened the scoring at the 57th minute, despite the consistent pressure by the Engineers offense. Woodsville’s defense was untested as Blue Mountain failed to register a shot on goal in the game.
Woodsville (3-1) hosts Littleton on Tuesday.
Barre, Vt.
The Hurricanes’ Abbie Koff and Sarah Jones each scored in the second half after a scoreless first 40 minutes. Jones and Maddie Koff were given assists. Morgan White made five saves in goal for the victory.
Hartford (2-0-1) travels to Mill River on Thursday.
East Burke, Vt.
Eleanor Frost had one goal and two assists for the Phoenix, while Maya Johnstone added a goal and Eliza Masteller and sisters Jocelyn and Jasmin Johnson each had an assist.
Abby Levy made seven saves for TSA.
Thetford
Oxbow played the game with only 11 athletes and no substitutions. Thetford took a 6-1 lead into halftime and added to it with eight more goals in the second half.
“(Oxbow) played extremely hard and they never gave up for the entire match,” Panthers first-year head coach Mark Weigel said.
Thetford (1-0) hosts Windsor on Monday. The Olympians return home to face Lyndon next Saturday.
Wells River
Woodsville (4-1) got offensive contributions from seven different players. Adam Cataldo scored twice and had three assists, Alex Enderson netted three goals. Cooper Davidson had three helpers. Sam Pushee scored twice, Brandon Brown scored once and Wyatt Rodger added a goal and an assist in the victory.
Jason Turner and Isaac Frost combined for ten saves. The Engineers led 7-0 by halftime.
Burlington
Leanne Burgess, 23:10, and Hannah Giesing, 23:16 also placed at the 5K. Woodstock’s Sydney Pilot led the Wasps with an 18th place finish, finishing at 22:37.
Woodstock’s Matthew Bassette led the way on the boys side, finishing in 32nd at 20:09.5. Oxbow’s Keelan Durham was the Olympians top finisher on the boys side at 20:31. Jeremy Hoyne-Grosvenor, of Montpelier, finished first at 16:30.
New London
Colby-Sawyer controlled the game, finishing with a 31-4 advantage in shots. Junior Paige Viens led all players with a hat trick, including the game-winning goal. Sophomore Nikki Pignone scored a pair of first half goals, including her first collegiate tally.
Hanover
Dartmouth junior Bridget Flynn led the women to victory with a perfect team score. Quinn Cooney, a freshman making his Big Green debut, was the top collegiate runner and helped the men to 16 points and the victory.
Flynn ran a 22:11.41 on the 6K course to take home the individual title. Freshman Lauren Sapone (22:20.17) was second with junior Leigh Moffett (22:25.30) and sophomores Lillian Anderson (22:39.38) and Eliza Dekker (22:52.76) rounding out the scoring for the Big Green.
Junior Kyle Dotterer (25:33.12), fellow rookie Henry Raymond (25:35.44) and sophomore Ben Szuhaj (25:42.36) followed behind Cooney for the men’s team.
Hanover
After the final match, seniors Emily Astarita and Julia Lau were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Dartmouth finished in second place with a record of 3-1, while Army was first with a perfect 4-0 mark.
Against Niagara, Astarita had 12 kills and 13 digs, while Zoe Leonard had 26 assists and 13 digs.
Abby Kott led the Gren in kills in the second match with 10, while Lau had 19 digs and Leonard had 19 assists.
