Ivan Deutsch was rushed to the hospital last Wednesday after he shot himself in the lower torso while attempting to unload the gun inside a vehicle, according to police.
Deutsch didn’t have a permit to carry the .380 caliber pistol, and he should have, Lebanon police said in a news release issued on Tuesday.
Police formally arrested Deutsch the day after the incident and cited him into court on the charge. Deutsch will appear in Lebanon District Court on Nov. 7.
No other charges are expected to be filed in the case, Lebanon Police Chief Richard Mello said on Tuesday afternoon.
Around noontime last Wednesday, Lebanon authorities rushed to the entrance of the West Lebanon Cemetery off Pleasant Street for a report of a man who shot himself in the upper leg near his groin.
Upon arrival, ambulance personnel briskly loaded Deutsch onto a stretcher and took him to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Deutsch has since been released.
Investigation into the shooting revealed that Deutsch had been waiting in a pull-off area near the cemetery for his girlfriend. He isn’t allowed on the premises of his girlfriend’s apartment, which is in the Pleasant Street area, police said.
While waiting for her, Deutsch attempted to unload the firearm when it accidentally discharged in his lap.
In New Hampshire, authorized gun owners must have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
A permit isn’t necessary to open carry.
Carrying a loaded gun inside a vehicle is considered a concealed carry, Mello said previously.
Deutsch was released from police custody on personal recognizance bail.
