Tunbridge, Vt. — Alice E. Metcalf, 85 died unexpectedly, Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 in Royalton, Vt. She was born March 15, 1931 in Wilder, Vt., the daughter of Harry N. and Emma (Johnson) Higgins. Her family lived in North Hartland, Vt., until she was six years old, when they moved to West Fairlee, Vt. She attended school in West Fairlee and later Thetford Academy.

On May 23, 1956 she married Charles E. Metcalf of Chelsea, Vt. They lived two years in Chelsea before moving to Tunbridge, where they lived until Charles’ death Sept. 30, 1999 and she has lived since.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, gardening, playing bingo, cards and skipbo. She also enjoyed attending adult daycare in Royalton, Vt., with her friends and attending a support group for the blind and visually impaired in Barre, Vt. She was also a NASCAR race fan and loved spending time with her large family.

She is survived by six children; Richard Higgins of Alburg, Vt., Leon Higgims of Tunbridge, Vt., Virginia Ballou of Thetford Center, Vt., George Metcalf of Graniteville, Vt., Deb Metcalf of Chelsea, Vt., and Sheila Miller of Tunbridge, Vt., 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, a brother Franklin Higgins of East Haven, Vt., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, a brother Everett Higgins and a sister Helen Godfrey.

There will be no public calling hours. A graveside memorial service will be held, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Chelsea, Vt., with Pastor Tom Harty officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either First Branch Ambulance, P.O. Box 74, Chelsea or Gifford Adult Day Care Program, 44 South Main St., Randolph, Vt.
